The rationale behind the use of student peer advisors includes providing role models and mentors for other students. It is also an opportunity for the peer advisors to gain real life experience in an internship or paid capacity. This opportunity is available to all majors, however, may be especially interesting for students in psychology, social work or business. The peer advisors benefit from learning many skills such as resume and cover letter writing, interviewing and job search strategies for use in their own careers and, depending on their abilities, to help other students. The program attempts to help students find and use their strengths in their own careers.
Based on research of other universities, in January 2006, Career Services hired their first peer advisor. Since that time, the department has hired several peer advisors each year as well as a few peer advisor interns.
