The Math Circle provides a quarterly opportunity for adults (parent/guardians and teachers) to engage in mathematical problem-solving. This quarterly gathering is a supportive forum organized by master teacher Linda Graf and Central professors Shiver and Rogan-Klyve that also includes tips about the mathematical games the elementary students will be exploring. The goal is to provide more opportunities for adult to learn more about their students’ current classroom experience and to engage in mathematical exploration as a family once the students go home.

Our adult sessions will begin Oct. 8th at 6:30 in Samuelson Room 117.  This fall we will be exploring mindsets and how learning is limitless.  Math Circles will be referring to the research of Dr. Jo Boaler, professor/author at Stanford University.  Dr. Boaler’s work is backed with brain research by some of the most well-renowned neuroplasticity scientists.  We will be looking at the first two keys of learning Dr. Boaler references in her book: “Limitless Mind: Learn, Lead, and Live without Barriers.” You do not need to read the book to participate in our discussions.

  • Oct. 8th:  Learning  Key #1 – Every time we learn, our brains form, strengthen, or connect neural pathways.  We need to replace the idea that learning ability is fixed, with the recognition that we are all on a growth  journey.
  • Oct. 22nd: Learning Key #2 – The times when we are struggling and making mistakes are the best times for brain growth.

We will spend half of our time together each Tuesday discussing these ideas and the other half experiencing math and problem solving.

Spanish Math Circle program, Monday nights (6:30- 7:30 pm)
