University Advancement and the CWU Foundation are offering a full scholarship for a ten day non-credit internship in Washington, DC in early September for four exemplary students from CWU. The program includes airfare, lodging, and a small stipend. Students may be nominated by peers, faculty, and staff.
This non-credit opportunity is hosted by former CWU Foundation board chair Carol Smoots, a lawyer and Central alum who resides in DC. Participants will be guests of the Smoots and will be provided a chance to meet with congressional representatives, CWU alumni, and others in positions of leadership. Sightseeing will be included, as well as free time for independent exploration of the city. The trip also includes a short stay at the Smoots’ beach home in Virginia.
The internship emphasizes leadership development.
Previous students have described this trip as “life changing,” and often return with a broad new understanding of potential achievement in both life and career goals. The trip itself is not limited to a specific department of study, but University Advancement staff will work to tailor the chosen candidates’ itinerary to include experiences within their scope of interest.
From 2013 participant Mahjabin “Maju” Qureshi: "This trip transformed the way I viewed our nation's historical converging point. There is something about the city that draws your attention to the many issues and instills a desire to make a difference. Prior to the trip we were asked to list organizations or people we were interested to meet in order to prepare our itinerary for 12 days of adventure. We scoured museums, visited our Washington State representatives on Capitol Hill, went to a Nationals game and met with some CWU Alumni. It was great exposure to the professional, fast-paced world. This invaluable opportunity would have been incomplete without Carol and Jay, whose hospitable nature knows no bounds. They were excellent hosts and greatly contributed to making our stay as enjoyable as possible."
