Musica Antiqua Begins Fall Concert Schedule at CWU

CWU Department of Music presents the first in this year's Musica Antiqua concerts, Handel at Home, in the McIntyre Music Building Recital Hall, on Sunday, September 29 at 4 p.m. Handel was, and still is one of the most recognized and popular composers of the Baroque era, his name kept alive by, if nothing else, the ubiquitous performances of his "Messiah" during the Christmas season. His initial popularity in London, however, was generated by the immense success of his operas in Italian style. This success created a great demand for music by Handel that could be performed by amateurs and professionals in smaller settings. Handel was only too willing to satisfy this rather lucrative demand and together with his publisher made available much chamber music for his adoring public. Directed by Margret Gries, the fall quarter Music Antiqua concert presents a variety of such music, including a solo cantata, a solo harpsichord suite and several works for small instrumental combinations.  This event is free and open to the public.
