On Thursday, May 9, the Department of Art at Central Washington University will host a reception and awards ceremony for the 2013 Juried Student Art Exhibition. The reception will take place from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the Sarah Spurgeon Gallery; the awards ceremony will begin at 7:00 p.m.
The annual exhibit and event is a showcase for the best student artwork created in the Department of Art over the course of the academic year and is co-sponsored by the Student Artist Collective (S.A.C.). At the awards ceremony, students receive gift certificates and cash awards for excellence in their artwork. Student awards are graciously donated by alumni, community members, arts organizations, and on-campus groups. The complete list of donors includes: Jane Orleman, Cynthia Ewer, Professor Glen Bach, Shane L. Johnson Illustration, Gallery One Visual Arts Center, PUNCH Gallery, the College of Arts and Humanities, the Sarah Spurgeon Gallery, the Department of Art, the Student Artist Collective (S.A.C.), and the Wildcat Shop.
This year’s jurors for the exhibition were Jay Hilburn for graphic design, and Sharon Arnold in the area of fine arts: Jay Hilburn received his B.F.A. in graphic design from CWU in 2005 and is now the Design Director at Hornall Anderson Design Works in Seattle, Washington. He has been a major contributor on many of Hornall Anderson’s largest client projects including Microsoft, Weyerhaeuser, T-Mobile, Novell, Pedigree, Safeco Insurance, Widmer Brothers Brewing Company, Frito-Lay, and Quaker. Sharon Arnold is a Seattle-based artist, curator, and writer who studied at Pratt Institute in New York and Cornish College of the Arts, Seattle. She is the founder of LxWxH, a contemporary gallery space in Seattle, and is also the Youth Programs Manager at Gage Academy of Art.
The 2013 Juried Student Art Exhibition will remain on display through May 11. Sarah Spurgeon Gallery is located in Randall Hall on Dean Nicholson Boulevard and is open weekdays 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and on weekends, 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Admission is free.
