INTERSTATE Exhibit Opens Thursday, November 2

The Sarah Spurgeon Gallery will host INTERSTATE: Where I-90 meets I-82, a national juried exhibition organized by the CWU Department of Art. Proceeds from the artist entry fees are used to support undergraduate art student scholarships.

The juror for the exhibition, who selected the artwork and the award winners, is Emily Zimmerman. Zimmerman has been the Director of the Jacob Lawrence Gallery at the University of Washington since January of 2017. The opening events will take place on Thursday, November 2, beginning with a lecture by Zimmerman at 4:00 p.m. in Randall Hall, room 117. Her lecture will be followed by a reception in the gallery from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Thirty-three artists were selected for the exhibition. The first-place award winner is Bartosz Beda for his oil painting titled Bad Boys Have a Nice Haircut III. Beda is a Polish artist currently living in Moscow, Idaho, whose work has been exhibited internationally. Cicelia Ross-Gotta, from Seattle, won second place for her handwoven textile and soft sculpture works. Cozette Phillips, a sculptor and art professor at Columbia Basin College in Pasco, received third place. Honorable mentions were given to Amanda Knowles, Michelle Lassaline, Molly Magai, and Lou Watson.

The exhibition will remain on view through December 3 (the gallery will be closed November 10, and November 22 through 26 for holidays). Sarah Spurgeon Gallery is located in Randall Hall on Dean Nicholson Boulevard and is open weekdays 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and on weekends, 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Admission is free.
