Fulbright U.S. Student Program, Gilman, & Boren Awards Information Sessions at UW

For students considering applying for the Fulbright US Student Program, the Gilman Scholarship, or the Boren Award, see the announcements below from the UW for opportunities in Seattle presented by the national organization. The rules and procedures for our students are essentially the same so these will be very informative and help you be successful in your application! Faculty and staff, please do what you can to make sure any of your students who might be interested know about these opportunities.

Thanks,

Lisa Euster

Representatives from the national offices of the Fulbright U.S. Student Program and the Boren Awards will be at UW Seattle on Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2013 to provide details about these programs and application processes. Students, alumni, faculty, staff, and others from UW and the surrounding community are welcome to attend. Whether you are planning to apply this year, or sometime in the future, don't miss this unique opportunity to hear from and ask questions of these experts!

(Faculty and staff are also welcome to attend other sessions specifically designed for advisers. Please contact Robin Chang at robinc@uw.edu for details on the adviser sessions.)

Walter Jackson, Fulbright U.S. Student Program Manager, will provide information on the Fulbright program, which provides grants for individually designed study/research projects in all fields or for English Teaching Assistantships.  A candidate will submit a Statement of Grant Purpose defining activities to take place during one academic year in a participating country outside the U.S. Candidates apply the year preceding the intended study, research or teaching assistantship abroad.

During their grants, Fulbrighters will meet, work, live with and learn from the people of the host country, sharing daily experiences.  The program facilitates cultural exchange through direct interaction on an individual basis in the classroom, field, home, and in routine tasks, allowing the grantee to gain an appreciation of others’ viewpoints and beliefs, the way they do things, and the way they think. Through engagement in the community, the individual will interact with their hosts on a one-to-one basis in an atmosphere of openness, academic integrity, and intellectual freedom, thereby promoting mutual understanding.

Susan Sharp, Boren Awards Assistant Director, will provide information on the Boren Scholarships and Fellowships, which provide funding for U.S. undergraduate and graduate students to become more proficient in the cultures and languages of world regions critical to U.S. interests, including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East. Maximum awards are $20,000 for the Boren Scholarships and $30,000 for the Boren Fellowships. In exchange for funding, recipients commit to working in the federal government for a minimum of one year.

Both sessions will be held on the UW Seattle campus in Paccar Hall room 391. View campus map. View driving directions.

Please RSVP to attend either or both sessions.
