Friday Safety Tip - Reporting Crime & Requesting Assistance

CWU encourages students, faculty, staff and visitors to report crimes and suspicious behaviors promptly.  The emergency number 9-1-1 from a residence phone, campus building or blue light directly connects the caller to the KITTCOM emergency dispatch center.  CWU      contracts with KITTCOM for professional dispatch service.  KITTCOM should be contacted for any emergency requiring police, fire or medical response either on or off campus.

Please note that when you call  9-1-1 from a cell phone you are sending signals through the air. The tower that picks up your phone’s signal may be near, however that information isn’t enough to tell the dispatcher where to find you. When you call 911 from a cell phone, the call often lands in a regional center. A call-taker in another city or another county may answer your call. To get help to you, there are two pieces of information the call-taker needs to know immediately: 1) which city you're calling from AND  2) what type of emergency you have.

The Federal Communications Commission has required that all wireless carriers be able to pinpoint your location for the 911 dispatchers, but the rule is coming in phases and there are plenty of exceptions.  Wireless carriers are required to complete 911 calls, even with the phone is not activated. Any cellular phone that turns on and off is capable of making a 911 call.

For incidents that are non-emergencies, but may require response, call the KITTCOM non-emergency line at (509) 925-8534 or the University Police & Parking  Services at (509) 963-2959. These numbers are in the CWU directory, the Ellensburg Telephone Directory, and are listed on the Emergency Procedures postings on campus.
