Central Cello Celebration Finale Concert

October 19-20, 2012

On October 19th and 20th over eighty cellists from across Washington and Idaho will converge upon Ellensburg to participate in the fifth Central Cello Celebration, hosted by the CWU Music Department.

The Finale Concert will be presented on October 20th at 7pm in the CWU Music Concert Hall.  Admission is free.  The CWU cello studio will join forces with cellists from around the Northwest in a massive cello ensemble.  In the spirit of this year’s College of Arts and Humanities theme:  "How Green Is My Valley?: Land, Water, Wind, the Human Impact on the World, Sustainability”, the Central Cello Celebration has commissioned Tom Walworth to compose a new cello choir work.  “The Elemental Beatles” features Walworth’s fun twist on Blackbird (Air), Penny Lane (Earth), Yellow Submarine (Water), and Here Comes the Sun (Fire).

The first half of the program will feature Seattle Symphony cellist Roberta Downey and pianist Anne Schilperoort performing a movement of Schubert’s Arpeggione Sonata and John Michel and Nikolas Caoile performing Piazzolla’s Le Grand Tango.  Also on the program will be a cello quartet arrangement of Stairway to Heaven and the famous work originally for organ, Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D minor.  Nikolas Caoile and Bruce Walker will be conducting the two cello ensembles.  During the concert, former principal cellist and 45-year-long veteran of the Seattle Symphony, Raymond Davis will be recognized for his distinguished career as a versatile performer and master teacher.

Additional performances are scheduled for Friday, October 19th at 7:00pm and October 20th at 3:00 pm, in the CWU Music Recital Hall.  These recitals will feature talented young cellists from across the state of Washington and Central Washington University cello performance majors.  Composers include Bach, Brahms and Shostakovich.   All performances are free.
