CAOILE / MICHEL DUO: CELLO AND PIANO RECITAL

- On November 5, Nikolas Caoile with John Michel will present a free recital of works for piano and cello by Beethoven, Barber, Britten and Arvo Pärt.  These dramatic works use a variety of contrasting harmonic languages.  We celebrate the upcoming 100th birthday of Benjamin Britten in November.  Britten’s Sonata for Cello and Piano is the first product of a fruitful collaboration between Britten and Mstislav Rostropovich.  The Barber Cello Sonata is written in a post-Romantic style.  Barber composed it while still a 22-year old student at Curtis Institute of Music.  Estonian composer Arvo Pärt wrote different versions of Fratres.  This version for Cello and Piano features arpeggiated variations in the cello over a meditative ground bass in the piano.  This 7 p.m. recital will be held in the McIntyre Music Building Concert Hall.
