Brown Bag Craft Talk with Sam McManis

Sam McManis has worked as a staff writer/columnist for California’s leading newspapers (the Los Angeles Times, San Francisco Chronicle, Sacramento Bee) for more than three decades. Until May, 2016, he was a lifestyle columnist and feature writer for the Sacramento Bee, covering the totality of California through columns and cover stories. He recently has had stories published in the New York Times and Wall Street Journal. His stories about California also have been published in many newspapers around the country, his work licensed by the Tribune Media Service and Associated Press wires. McManis has received numerous journalism awards, dating to the 1980s when he covered sports for the L.A. Times. Most recently, he has been honored three times in the past four years by the Society for Features Journalism for his travel writing and columns. Also, in 2016, he received a “Best in the West” award for arts and entertainment writing. Visit California, a website and travel industry group, selected him as California’s “in-state” journalist of the year for 2016. In February, 2018, his book of travel essays, Crossing California: A Cultural Topography of a State of Wonder and Weirdness, will be published by Quill Driver Press/Linden Publishing of Fresno, Calif. He currently is completely a Masters in English literature at Central Washington University.
