AFGHANISTAN: Ethics, Witnessing, and The Crises of Protection

November 12th

Milo Smith Tower Theater from 2:00 - 3:30 p.m.

Anne Cubilie talk begins from her experiences working in a remote province of Northern Afghanistan in the fall of 2000, during the last months of the civil war.  She was sent in by the united nations to collect testimonies, primarily from women, who were recently displaced by fighting.  The talk uses the experience of testimonial collection in a war zone to consider the complicated processes of witnessing to human rights abuse for the witness, the translator, the "outside expert" and the large structures of human rights and international aid which require such testimonies.
