Social justice advocate Sally Eck to facilitate workshops at CWU
Ellensburg, Wash. (May 2, 2013) – The Center for Leadership and Community Engagement is pleased to welcome Sally Eck, instructor in the Women’s Studies Department at Portland State University, for a day of workshops on Thursday, May 2 in SURC 202. These workshops are co-sponsored by the Museum of Culture and Environment, Women’s and Gender Studies Program, Center for Diversity and Social Justice, Africana and Black Studies, and the Department of Sociology.
Eck will facilitate two workshops and a meet and greet while visiting Central Washington University.
• 3 – 4:30 p.m.: Social Identity Mapping workshop.
• 4:30- 5 p.m.: Informal meet and greet.
• 6- 7:30 p.m.: Interrupting Oppression workshop.

Eck earned bachelor’s degrees in Women’s Studies and Sociology from Portland State University in 2000 and a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership and Administration in 2001, also from PSU. She has taught at PSU since her graduation, specializing in social justice education and feminist pedagogy. Eck works with Heartwork Educational Consulting where she offers training and consultation regarding oppression and co-creating positive social change.
“Her energy is infectious and her methodologies will help us all to think about the power dynamics embedded within leadership development and community-engaged work,” CLCE director Harold McNaron said. “I encourage anyone who has the time to come to these interactive workshops. It is my hope that the work we do together in these workshops will be generative, starting conversations and creating new ways of knowing that deepen our individual and collective impact at CWU and beyond.”
The Center for Leadership and Community Engagement works to foster public awareness and leadership for important local and global issues. It also provides support to non-profit initiatives and develops service-learning opportunities that motivate CWU students, staff and faculty to better their campus and community.
