4/19 Artist Lectures: Sharon Arnold and Jay Hilburn

Please join the Student Artist Collective and the Department of Art for lectures by Sharon Arnold and Jay Hilburn, the two jurors for the 2013 Juried Student Art Exhibit. The talks will take place on Friday (4/19) beginning at 2:00 p.m. in Randall Hall, Room 117:

Sharon Arnold is a Seattle-based artist, curator, and writer. She studied at Pratt Institute in New York, focusing on sculpture, semiotics, and art history; and completed her last year and a half Magna Cum Laude at Cornish College of the Arts in 2006. Ms. Arnold is founder of Bridge Productions/LxWxH. Historically, Length Width Height has been a box of art with two original pieces of work by two artists, and an essay or literary project by a featured writer. In 2012, LxWxH expanded to a full scale brick and mortar gallery space in Seattle, Washington.  Ms. Arnold is also the Youth Programs Manager at Gage Academy of Art, where she works to provide extensive and original fine arts programming to Seattle's youth and teens. Ms. Arnold's own body of work stems from unique and repetitive applications of traditional and non-traditional mediums on paper. The imagery manifests as fictional cartography or mythology; combining the idea of mapping with suggestions of de-coding, language, and rhythm. Ms. Arnold also continues to maintain the art blog Dimensions Variable as an ongoing effort to further discussion of art in the Pacific Northwest.

Jay Hilburn is the Design Director at Hornall Anderson Design Works in Seattle, Washington. He joined the Hornall Anderson team in 2000, and his roles have changed over the years: starting as a designer, then senior designer, now design director – but one thing hasn’t changed, his commitment to great design, his positive attitude, his stalwart work ethic, his appetite for challenge, and his love of long walks on short piers. I guess that is more than one thing.

Jay has been a major contributor on many of Hornall Anderson’s largest client projects including Microsoft, Weyerhaeuser, T-Mobile, Novell, Pedigree, Safeco Insurance, Widmer Brothers Brewing Company, Frito-Lay, and Quaker. Jay received his BFA in Graphic Design from the CWU Department of Art in 2005.

The 2013 Juried Student Art Exhibit will be on view April 22 through May 11 in the CWU Sarah Spurgeon Gallery. The reception and awards ceremony will take place on Thursday May 9, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. (the awards ceremony begins at 7:00 p.m.). For more information please contact Heather Horn Johnson, Gallery Manager, or 509.963.3153.
