“fluidity” Exhibit Opens in Sarah Spurgeon Gallery, March 28

The CWU Sarah Spurgeon Gallery will host “fluidity,” a solo exhibition by sculptor and installation artist Andy Behrle. The opening events will take place on Thursday, March 28, beginning with a lecture by the artist at 4:00 p.m. in Randall Hall, room 117. The lecture will be immediately followed by a reception in the gallery from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Behrle, who has an educational background in philosophy and religion, finds links between our scientific understanding of the cosmos and the essence of the divine. In the artwork “for Nikola” a funnel spins within a flask of water while light projects the undulating movements against the gallery wall. By shining light through bodies of moving water and projecting motion that would otherwise go unseen, Behrle makes connections between two life-giving forces of the universe. The divine in all its various names and religious practices is often thought of in terms of light, and water has long been a symbol of spiritual cleansing and used in all the World’s great religious traditions to exemplify purity.
Andy Behrle received his M.F.A. in sculpture from Arizona State University in 2003. In 2009, he moved to Birmingham, Alabama, where he focused on creating new work inspired by the landscape, geology, culture, and vibrancy of the South for numerous group exhibitions. In 2012 he was selected for inclusion in ArtPrize 2012 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and was an artist-in-residence at A Studio in the Woods in New Orleans, Louisiana. He recently became a resident of Zillah, Washington.

“fluidity” will remain on display through April 14. Sarah Spurgeon Gallery is located in Randall Hall on Dean Nicholson Boulevard and is open weekdays 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and on weekends, 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Admission is free. For more information, please go to
