CWU Seeks $10 Million Grant to Study Wind Turbines
Protect Insurance
Coverage for Your
Dependents

The state will cancel the insurance coverage for all state employees' family members (children, spouse/domestic partner), effective December 31, 2009, unless the employee provides verification of each dependent's eligible status prior to November 30, 2009. Complete instructions, including a list of acceptable documentation and a return envelope, were included in a September mailing from the state to individual home addresses. All employees who cover family members on their medical insurance should look for, complete, and return this important information.
Acceptable documentation includes copies of marriage certificates/domestic partnership registration and proof of shared living quarters (for spouse/domestic partner); birth certificates; federal tax returns (with financial information obscured); adoption certificates or decrees; and other pertinent legal documents.
CWU Human Resources has posted copies of the state's requirements and mailings on its home page under "News" and will send campus-wide e-mail reminders. You can view this vital information at www.cwu.

Central Washington University has applied for a $10.4 million federal grant to conduct innovative energy research at the Wild Horse Wind and Solar facility, which is located fifteen miles east of Ellensburg.
CWU applied to the Department of Energy for the grant in late July, and award selection recommendations will be published in mid-October. To be distributed over the next two years, the grant would fund the construction of a new 3.0-megawatt research wind turbine, a 4,000 square foot research and data facility, and a smaller wind turbine research platform.
A partnership between academia and industry, the program combines the efforts of Puget Sound Energy, Janicki Industries, 3TIER, and the Bonneville Power Administration, with CWU, the Oregon Institute of Technology, and the University of Washington.
If funded, CWU Industrial and Engineering Technology students and faculty would be able to collaborate with these academic and industrial researchers to further the proliferation of wind energy in the nation and the world. The success of such research could create sustainable energy alternatives to petroleum dependency.
"Students would have the opportunity to gain valuable experience in collecting and analyzing data," said Bill Bender, professor of
Windfarm
Industrial and Engineering Technology.
CWU's grant proposal also includes the inception of a new degree program in renewable energy and sustainable technology.
"This program would provide students with training in a field that is quickly growing and prepare them for the 'green' jobs that are very much needed," noted Bender.

Imani Winds Explore New Territory for Woodwind Quintets
Imani    Through fusing African, American, European, and Latin American traditions, Imani Winds has earned a distinct presence in classical music.    Composed of Monica Ellis, bassoon; Toyin Spellman-Diaz, oboe; Jeff Scott, horn; Valerie Coleman, flute; and Mariam Adam, clarinet, the quintet will perform in CWU's Music Building Concert Hall on Sunday, October 11, at 7:30 p.m., as part of the 2009-10 Performing Arts and Presidential Speaker Series. Tickets are $25 reserved, $15 general admission, and CWU students with ID will be admitted free.
Since 1997, Imani Winds has presented inspirational outreach, genre-blurring collaborations, and culturally poignant programs. Through its Legacy Commissioning Project, the group is looking to introduce new music and voices to the classical idiom. The goal of the project is to commission ten new works from classical composers and their counterparts from jazz, Middle Eastern, Latin, and other musical styles. Advocacy for new music, coupled with their performing excellence, has led to numerous awards for Imani Winds, along with unique collaborations with other artists.
