The primary duties of the Research Technologist will be to maintain, support and operate analytical instruments (including a flow cytometer) in support of teaching and research in the biological and physical sciences, train new users, run external user samples, and keep all user and maintenance records.
Bachelor’s Degree in an appropriate scientific field and experience operating various analytical instruments OR, an equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education
Excellent interpersonal, oral and communication skills
Ability to learn new research techniques or methods
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Experience as a laboratory technician

Work is performed in a laboratory setting with frequent in-person interactions. It is essential to be able to meet the physical demands of remaining at a desk/computer work station for prolonged periods of time, using repetitive arm, hand and finger movements. Some stooping, kneeling, bending, crouching, lifting, walking, carrying or moving of objects and other movements may be required. Some evening or weekend work and/or occasional travel may be required.
Flow cytometer operation and maintenance in support of research and teaching:
• Maintain the flow cytometer and document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and all maintenance performed
• Train new users on the machine and instruct all users in sample preparation
• Maintain complete user records of all testing performed
• Identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results, correct the problems encountered or immediately notify the Keck-Murdock Flow Cytometry Facility Director or the immediate supervisor
• Assist students and instructors in teaching laboratory exercises requiring flow cytometer
• Run external user samples
• Maintain a record of all the flow cytometer supplies – Make sure supplies have received dates, expiration dates, and opened dates
• Review/train on new procedures
• Maintain an online calendar
• Explore service contracts in the region
• Perform duties as directed by the Keck-Murdock Flow Cytometry Facility Director
Perform technical procedures and operate other analytical instruments in support of research and teaching:
• Assist in the operation of other scientific instruments already within College of the Sciences (COTS), e.g. spectrometers (ICP-MS, GC-MS, NMR), and others as needed.
• Collect, record, and verify accuracy of data generated by these instruments
• Demonstrate and explain various laboratory techniques to laboratory personnel, students, and others
• Participate in laboratory meetings and planning sessions
• Prepare laboratory reagents and chemicals
• Order laboratory reagents, chemicals, and other supplies

Yakima Valley Community College is accepting applications for one Laboratory Technician III in the Arts and Sciences Division. This is a Cyclic, working 11 months, 40 hours per week, with Leave Without Pay from August 1 - September 1, classified position with periodic salary increases, and an anticipated start date of September 2, 2014.
Reporting to the Dean - Arts and Sciences, the Laboratory Technician 3 is responsible for the support of instruction and labs in Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Geology. The Laboratory Technician 3 will supervise work study and part time hourly technicians, establish and maintain safety procedures, manage and purchase laboratory inventory as requested by faculty and maintain live organisms.
1. Five years of clinical, chemical, public health or related laboratory experience including one year at a level equivalent to Laboratory Technician 1 or higher
2. College education involving major study in a laboratory science may be substituted, year for year, for the required general experience
3. Completion of a course for laboratory assistants, approved by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, may be substituted for two years of the required general experience
* Experience setting up equipment and supplies for experiments in an educational laboratory.
* Knowledge of MSDS procedures for handling, storage, and disposing of hazardous waste materials
* Experience maintaining UV/VIS & IR spectrometers, GLC and HPLC instruments.
* Experience preparing solutions of desired concentration (e.g. molarity and mass percent) and maintaining microbial cultures
* Gather, assemble, organize, store, and label all equipment, chemicals, and supplies used in the instruction of Biology, Chemistry, Geology, and Physics classes at YVCC
* Maintain organisms (e.g. bacterial cultures, protists, termites, salt water aquarium, etc.) and perform quality checks to insure culture integrity
* Understand and follow complex oral and written instructions
* Set up laboratory demonstration and experiments in the classrooms
* At the conclusion of demonstrations and experiments, in accordance with standards for safety and environmental requirements, disassemble the equipment, clean and maintain the equipment used, and place all items back in their appropriate locations
* Purchase, pick up, properly store, and distribute special materials needed by faculty
* Maintain appropriate and current MSDS files in a designated YVCC location
* Assign, schedule, train, direct and supervise the support duties of work study students and part time hourly employees
* Assure that every work study student and part time hourly employee has received orientation and training in the MSDS requirements of all chemicals that might be encountered in the classrooms, storerooms, and prep areas
