The Marshall W. Mayberry Arboretum was dedicated by the founder of the Botany program at Central Washington University, Dr. Marshall W. Mayberry, in 1979. The Arboretum has been hosted by the Biological Science Department since that time.  Dr. Mayberry was a faculty member in the Department of Biological Sciences at Central Washington University for 23 years and continued to teach part time at CWU for many years after his retirement.

The initial planting for the arboretum included seven trees: Dawn Redwood, European Hornbeam, American Sweetgum, White Ash, Japanese Zelkova, European White Birch and a Little-leaf Linden. The arboretum has grown since that time to include more than 70 trees. Many of the trees currently in the arboretum have been planted in honor of Biology professors and several are CWU Class Trees. The Arboretum surrounds the CWU Biology Greenhouse which houses plants for instruction and research purposes and hosts open hours for the public during the academic school year.
