As 9-year-old Madison Kennedy dribbled the soccer ball up and down the field on Wednesday, trying not to get it stolen from the defense in a game of cat and mouse, she wasn’t thinking about the impact she and her fellow campers were making almost 8,000 miles away.
Kennedy was simply working on her footwork, dribbling and defense, all while keeping an eye out for the Utopia Frozen Yogurt truck to pull into the Ellensburg High School parking lot.
Though most of the 55 campers may not have realized it, they — or more realistically, their parents — were helping Blaise Dondji’s village in Cameroon.
Dondji moved to Ellensburg from Connecticut in 2008 to become a biology professor at Central Washington University. He also helps coach Ellensburg’s U11 girls soccer team, the Midnight Fighters.
