Habitat Restoration Technician (2 Positions) Sound Salmon Solutions

Sound Salmon Solutions (SSS) is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit and was founded in 1990. SSS serves as the Regional Fisheries Enhancement Group for the Stillaguamish, Snohomish, and Island County watersheds in Washington State. We nurture the relationships between people and our wild spaces to support salmon recovery through interactive education, hands-on stewardship, and state-of-the-art habitat restoration.

POSITION TITLE: Habitat Restoration Technician START DATE: January 2, 2016
END DATE: June 30, 2016 - with possibility of extension

JOB TASKS:
Remove and control invasive and noxious weeds from project sites.
Assist with construction of habitat restoration
projects, such as planting, soil erosion control
projects, such as planting, soil erosion control measures, and installation of livestock fences. Perform maintenance on existing restoration sites: mowing grass, brushcutting blackberry, applying herbicide and other tasks as assigned using walk- behind field mowers, gas-powered brush cutters, Kubota, tractors and hand tools.
Collect, manage, and summarize field data pertaining to riparian vegetation using Trimble GPS and tablets.
Maintain a daily record of activities and prepare site reports as requested
Communicate with staff, landowners, partner organizations and the general public about restoration work and salmon recovery efforts. Attend and help to run outreach and volunteer events as needed
Attend necessary training and testing sessions.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under the instructions from the Habitat Specialist, Habitat Coordinator and Program Manager, perform assigned tasks to the standards offered by SSS manuals and training sessions.
Operate equipment safely and effectively both in the field and in the shop, taking care to know the safety guidelines of each instrument before use. Keep the shop and other work areas safe, clean and organized.
Communicate quickly and effectively with SSS supervisors any field related and relevant information: equipment needs; interpersonal difficulties; comfort level with tasks; concerns for difficulties; comfort level with tasks; concerns for safety, public relations with site landowners or greater community. Understanding limitations in the field and executing tasks to the best of your ability. Communicating immediately if a task is not achievable for any reason. Keeping abreast of policy, protocol and safety changes by attending staff meetings, reading emails and manuals offered by supervisors.

Duties

Duties include, but are not limited to:

Responsible for the development of area interpretive  programs, including partnerships with the U.S. Forest Service and other regional partners.
Researches, develops and conducts formal interpretive programs and educational activities.
Facilitates educational outreach opportunities with local and region schools, organizations and educational groups.
Assists in design and implementation of self-guided exhibits and park orientation systems.
Maintains interpretive exhibits and collections; and related facilities, interpretive trails, kiosks, bulletin boards and park historical archives.

THIS POSITION:

Qualifications

PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
One year experience in public speaking and presentation.
One year experience in the coordination of youth-oriented (K-12) outdoor education curriculum and lesson plans.

We encourage anyone (all backgrounds, all ages) interested in researching Giant Pandas to apply. However, the majority of the applicants are usually undergraduate seniors or recently graduated biology/conservation majors. Your primary responsibilities will be to conduct research on Giant Panda Stereotypic, Breeding, and Endocrinology Projects. Location You will be based predominantly in Ya’an China, working closely with the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda (CCRCGP) to research factors effecting mate preference in captive giant pandas. The interns primary job will be daily tracking of panda locations to score male-male competition behavior, pre-breeding and breeding behavior, track familiarity, stereotypic behavior observations, and collect and prepare fecal samples for hormone analysis. Other duties might include, cataloging fecal samples, downloading videos weekly, and writing a bi-monthly blog post. Conservation Focus With connections to the San Diego Zoo and CCRCGP this internship provides a well- rounded and practical experience perfect for building a career in international biological conservation or zoo biology.

Importance: This project has the potential to improve captive breeding methods currently utilized by both zoological and private breeding facilities of endangered species. Given the predicted results, the San Diego Zoo and CCRCGP can provide a model system of captive breeding that integrates both genetic and behavioral information to determine optimal mating pairs. It seems clear that conservation breeding programs in zoos and breeding centers have much to gain from a more integrated approach, addressing both the importance of genetic management and natural mating preferences.

Local Living: Accommodation will be in Ya’an with running hot water, electricity, and internet. Heaters are either by gas or electric and are provided in the housing if you are staying over the winter months. You will be expected to keep up with daily housekeeping, cooking and shopping on your own. Panda interns are expected to work independently, with only minimal supervision, managing their own time and meeting any assigned deadlines. You will usually be able to take at least one or two days off each week, depending on current work priorities. On approved days off you can hike, go wildlife watching or take trips to other cities but this will all be on your own money. There are various cultural events you may attend with local friends, such as festivals and national holidays, which can provide a fascinating and very personal insight into local traditions. Medical facilities are extremely basic; anything beyond a minor medical emergency would require international evacuation where full medical facilities are available. All interns are required to have adequate insurance to cover any costs that ensue, since a full medical evacuation back to Europe could cost up to 100,000GBP. We will need relevant medical history and proof of travel insurance if selected.

Language: You will be expected and encouraged to learn some of the Chinese language in order to be integrated as fully as possible into the community during your stay. This will come quickly with daily immersion and opportunities to practice with local staff and students. It is a good idea to bring a dictionary and audio learning materials with you in order to facilitate your studies.

Intern Contribution: Interns are required to work for a minimum of ~3 months (refer to dates listed above) and pay a contribution of $2500 USD for the entire stay. This funding will contribute to the individual’s accommodation and research- associated costs during the internship (see below). All interns are required to cover their own travel to the country (flights around $700- $1,000 USD from Portland, Oregon) and insurance. We require proof of insurance before starting of the internship. You are also required to cover your own food expenses. Average costs for shopping at the local grocery store is ~35 USD per week. Interns should budget approximately 400 USD for food (grocery store and dining out) while conducting their internship. All interns are required to get their Chinese Visa on their own (PDXWildlife will help you with all questions). These can be obtained via sending your passport and visa application materials to the closest Chinese consulate or through Travisa.com. Please contact your local consulate or Travisa for further details. Depending on the visa that you are approved for, you will possibly have to extend your visa in country at your own cost. All interns are also required to obtain their own vaccinations for travel in country (depending on insurance and current vaccinations this can range from 200 USD - 1,000 USD). 

Below is an example of where fund allocations from an intern contribution goes and may not be the exact distribution of funds based on changes in circumstance and program needs:Prices are per day.

-Accommodation (apartment and utilities in Ya’an): $11.00USD

-Office rental & utilities (for the office space at the base): $3.00 USD

-Staff salaries, overhead and project costs: $11.00 USD

-Administrative costs: $3.00 USD

-Transport (to ride the bus every morning with the base workers): $1.00 USD

The Mid-Columbia River National Wildlife Refuge Complex (MCRNWRC) is looking for 4 biological interns to assist with wildlife and habitat management projects.  Interns will be an integral part of a weed control and habitat monitoring team for the MCNWRC.  Most work will be focused on the mapping of noxious weed species on the refuges across the Complex.  Interns will become familiar with vegetation identification, use of ArcMap and a Trimble GPS unit to map weeds.  Interns will also assist with biological surveys and maintenance projects in support of the Refuge mission such as surveys for burrowing owl, aquatic vegetation, and aquatic invertebrates.

Job Description: The Kittitas Environmental Education Network (KEEN) seeks an independent contractor to work as an Environmental Educator in Ellensburg to design and implement outdoor learning experiences for local elementary and middle school students. We are seeking an experienced educator with proven expertise in program development and management, exemplary communication skills, a solid understanding of Washington State science learning standards, and boundless enthusiasm for outdoor education.

Primary Responsibilities
With the support of grant funding from the Washington State Recreation and Conservation Office’s No Child Left Inside program, KEEN will offer science-based outdoor summer camps, a Friday Outdoor After School, and monthly walkable science field trips from the local elementary and middle schools. The primary responsibilities of the environmental educator will be to design and implement these programs. The Environmental Educator will:

appropriate safety protocol.

Short-term Field Assistants Needed for Apple Pollination Research in Eastern Washington
We (WSU Department of Entomology) are seeking to hire several assistants for a joint project among Washington State University, the USDA, and the Washington Tree Fruit Research Commission on apple pollination in eastern Washington for spring 2016. The project will involve spending considerable time in the field in various weather conditions, counting apple blossoms in orchards, and observing honey bee foraging behavior. All assistants will be responsible for personal transportation to and from field sites. Field sites will include orchards near Pomona and Quincy. Assistants will be compensated for work-related activities, and rate of pay will be $12/hour. Work will likely begin around April 10 and will continue for approximately one month. During this window of time, assistants will need to be available to work on weekdays and weekends.

GENERAL INFORMATION:   The Natural Resource Biologist will work at the direction of the Natural Resources Supervisor to implement ongoing wildlife, avian, fish and nuisance species management associated with operation of the Wells Hydroelectric Project.  This position will be primarily responsible for implementing the Wildlife and Botanical Management Plan, Avian Protection Plan, and the wildlife portions of the Off-License Settlement Agreement.  This position will be responsible for control of nuisance wildlife at hatcheries and on the reservoir and will provide ongoing support for terrestrial and aquatic studies. 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:   A Bachelor's of Science degree in biology, ecology, fisheries, wildlife or other closely related science degree is required.  Experience working with native and nuisance terrestrial and aquatic species is highly desirable. Experience working on or around large hydroelectric projects and with anadromous fish species is also desirable. Experience employing parametric statistics, report writing, spreadsheet and database management is preferred. Experience and comfort safely towing and trailering equipment such as boats and ATVs will be considered a plus.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: 

Administer contracts, budgets and reports associated with the Wildlife Botanical Management Plan, Avian Protection Plan, Off-License Settlement Agreement and the wildlife nuisance species management program.
Supervise the operation of the Wells Wildlife and Cassimer Bar Wildlife areas.
Assist with prevention of nuisance wildlife outages, report avian collision and electrocution events, and coordinate nest management activities.
Perform analyses and critically prepare/review regulatory documents and reports.  Develop and implement wildlife and terrestrial species studies related to existing wildlife and avian plans and agreements, and compliance with the FERC operating license.
Participate within interdisciplinary teams working on strategic wildlife, fish, water quality and aquatic resources issues. 
Represent the District in regional wildlife, avian, nuisance species and habitat enhancement forums.
Other activities may be assigned including wildlife, botanical and invasive plant surveys, avian nest management, bald eagle surveys, rare plant surveys, nuisance species management, predator control activities, terrestrial resource management and inventories associated with transmission and distribution systems.
Support natural resource studies associated with implementation of the Aquatic Settlement Agreement, Anadromous Fish Agreement, Wells 401 water quality certification, and FERC license for the Wells Project.
Participate in Endangered Species Act consultations related to terrestrial species found within the Wells Project, the District's Distribution System and within Douglas County.
Represent the District in a highly professional manner and use scientifically defensible study results to inform management decisions and processes. 
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:  

A strong scientific background in biology, wildlife ecology or zoology coupled with an applied understanding of statistical and analytical principles commonly used in natural resource management.
Excellent organizational, planning, technical writing and oral communication skills.
Extensive knowledge and proficiency in the utilization of computer software programs. 
Candidates must be physically able to perform field research including walking or wading into remote locations, working in and around cold water and be physically able to carry up to 40 pounds of field equipment.  A valid Washington State, or equivalent, driver's license is required.

Biological Science Technician GS-0404-04/05

The Pacific Northwest Research Station, Land and Watershed Management team is recruiting for biological science technician(s) (natural resources) GS-0404-05. These temporary positions, which will not exceed 1,039 hours, begin in May or June 2016. 

The positions are based in the station’s Corvallis Forestry Sciences Laboratory, Corvallis, Oregon.  The seasonal employee will function as part of a work crew performing technical duties in support of  professional scientists conducting various ecological and silvicultural research projects.  Crew members will be collecting data for a  ponderosa pine thinning study. Data will be collected on overstory trees, downed wood, understory vegetation, and climate.  Some crew members may also collect data on a study addressing responses to various stream buffer widths. 

The work  requires weekly overnight travel, walking on rough terrain, and traversing recently burned understories.  Temperatures may range from very hot and dry, to cool and wet. Rain, snow, wind, or dust may be encountered. The work also requires the use of safety equipment such as boots, gloves, long sleeves, and hardhats. Employees must always exercise safe work practices.  All applicants must be U.S. citizens.

Crater Lake Science & Learning Center 2016 Student Fellowship

In 2016 the Crater Lake Science and Learning Center will offer up to four fellowships to support undergraduate or graduate student investigations. Each fellowship may be funded up to $4,000.

Who is eligible?
Senior undergraduate and graduate students currently enrolled in a degree-seeking program at a college or university are eligible to apply. Research Fellows must be self-directed individuals, have a dedicated faculty advisor in the field of the proposed research, and propose research that will contribute to issues of management concern at Crater Lake National Park. A Fellow must be able to complete the proposed project within one year from receipt of the fellowship award.

What types of projects will be funded?
The objective of the fellowship is to support student research at Crater Lake National Park that can inform and advance the needs of management and decision making at the park in four general areas: aquatic resources, terrestrial resources, social science, and applied technology.

The incumbent of this position will work under the direction of the Fisheries Technician IV+ as a journey-level technician with a high level of independence. The Fisheries Technician III will complete diverse work elements including collection of biological data and habitat conditions using established scientific principles and techniques that will guide resource management. Incumbent will assist conservation programs/projects such as fence building, planting vegetation, distributing fish, operating and maintaining equipment, gill netting, trapping, piscicide application, and electrofishing (boat and backpack).

This position is a permanent seasonal or temporary position where the incumbent will likely be required to work long, unusual hours, weekends, and occasionally holidays. Job Description
Technicians are needed to survey songbird communities in the boreal forests of northern Alberta.  This project will run as part of an initiative designed to evaluate the impacts of oil sands activities on forest landbird populations throughout the Oil Sands Area.

Technicians will work in teams of 2-3 and live in remote, tent-based camps that may be relocated to different survey areas every few days.  Distance-based point-count surveys or recording units will be used to quantify avian abundance.  Habitat and vegetation sampling may also be conducted.  Technicians will be responsible for identifying suitable camp locations and assessing access to survey areas on an ongoing basis while in the field.

Employment period will be 90 work days compressed into roughly 3-months beginning May 2, 2016. Work will be highly rewarding but also physically demanding.  Technicians should expect early mornings, long/variable working days, uncooperative weather, difficult terrain, wildlife encounters (including bears), and persistent insects.  Food, transportation (via 4x4 truck, ATV, and/or helicopter), and accommodation will be provided while in the field.  Crew members are responsible for accommodation in Edmonton for the duration of the position.

Job Requirements
Required skills and experience:

Previous experience (≥ 2 field seasons) conducting avian monitoring field programs, preferably in the boreal forest region.
Ability to identify boreal forest landbirds by sight and sound.
Experience living and working in remote field camps for extended periods of time.
Demonstrated ability to work independently.
Applicants must be in excellent physical condition and must be comfortable working independently under diverse and often adverse conditions including biting insects, heat, cold, wet, and bears.
Experience navigating in forest regions using GPS, map, and compass.
Job offers are conditional on passing a security screening and Health Canada medical examination.
Applicants must be Canadian Citizens or hold valid working permits for Canada and must have a valid Class 5 driver’s license or equivalent (e.g. 5L in Manitoba or G in Ontario)
Essential character traits include initiative, thoroughness, dependability, and effective interpersonal skills.

Additional preferred skills:

Experience supervising fieldwork and handling field logistics, such as creating sampling/survey schedules, coordinating travel and daily activities, summarizing data, and providing regular status updates.
Experience conducting vegetation surveys and/or ability to identify vascular plants and ecosite communities.
Experience in the safe operation of off-road vehicles (4x4 trucks, ATVs, and trailers).
Experience entering, verifying, and managing scientific data using Excel or Access.

Job Description
The USGS Western Ecological Research Center is seeking to fill multiple positions for Biological Science Technicians to conduct Giant Gartersnake (Thamnophis gigas) field studies at several sites in the Sacramento Valley, California. Primary duties include aquatic trap monitoring and capture for abundance, occupancy, and capture- mark-recapture studies, habitat and vegetation surveys, husbandry of captive snakes for radio telemetry surgical implantation/removal, and radio tracking. Summer weather in the Sacramento Valley is sunny and hot, with average daytime temperatures in the 90°s F with many days well over 100°F. Technicians will meet at the Dixon office each day, but field work is conducted across the Sacramento Valley on private, USFWS, and NGO properties. Housing is not provided.

Job Requirements
B.S. degree in biology, wildlife management, or a related field is preferred. Prior field research experience preferred. Valid driver’s license required. Experience driving large 4x4 trucks on dirt roads preferred. Radio telemetry experience preferred, but not required. Successful applicants must possess the ability to hike moderate distances in waders and paddle a kayak while carrying equipment, often in hot or otherwise inclement weather. Hours can be irregular and long. Must be willing to work weekends. These positions are physically demanding. Must be able to record and maintain data in field notebooks and electronic databases (iPhone). Ability to work independently and as part of a team while maintaining good communication with the field supervisor is essential.

 

Length of individual appointments will vary between 5-8 months. The expected start date is mid-March 2016.

Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest Cle Elum Ranger District  Biological Technician (Plants) 

Temp GS-0404-4 Summer 2016

Description: Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest, Cle Elum Ranger District will be advertising for one TEMP GS-0404-4 Biological Technician (Plants), located in Cle Elum, Washington.  

This incumbent will work primarily in the field independently to complete inventories on vascular plants with a focus on non-native plant species. The duties will include using a hand-held sprayer mounted to a truck bed and at times a backpack sprayer to apply herbicide on National Forest Lands. Other duties will also include mapping (GPS, ArcMap GIS) invasive plant populations and support for the native plant program such as seed collection. The successful applicant will have experience in plant identification, computer data entry, GPS, operating a 4-wheel drive vehicle, and field navigation skills. Applicants with the ability to field identify local flora, experience with the use of microscopes and dichotomous keys, and a commercial applicator’s pesticide certification are preferred. 
Qualifications: Prefered applicants should have some course work in biology, botany, plant ecology, forest ecology, or a related discipline, or have an equivalent combination of education and experience . Applicants must have the ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds and to carry heavy loads. The position may be filled at a GS-04 pay grade ($13.68/hr), based on applicant qualifications. United States citizens only will be considered for these positions. Applicants must have: 1) botanical skills to identify state-listed noxious weeds and other exotic plants at various growth stages and to distinguish these from native species that may be “look-alikes” . 2) Applicants must have a current driver’s license.

Physical Demands:  This position requires field work for up to four months (approximately June 16 through September 30th). The incumbent may encounter temperature extremes, rough walking surfaces, steep terrain, rain, wind, and possibly snow.

Location: The position’s duty station is located at Cle Elum Ranger Station, Cle Elum, Washington, 82 miles east of Seattle, and 27 miles west of Ellensburg.

ABOUT THE OKANOGAN-WENATCHEE NATIONAL FOREST:  This forest encompasses more than 4-million acres in Washington State and stretches north to south from the Canadian border to the Goat Rocks Wilderness - a distance of about 180 miles. The forest lies east of the Cascade Crest, which defines its western boundary. The eastern edge of the forest extends into the Okanogan highlands, then south along the Okanogan and Columbia Rivers, and then to the Yakima River valley. Because of this wide geographic range, the forest is very diverse - from the high, glaciated alpine peaks along the Cascade Crest and the numerous mountain ranges extending eastward from the crest, through deep, lush valleys of old growth forest, to the dry and rugged shrub-steppe country at its eastern edge. Precipitation varies widely - from more than 70-inches along the crest to less than 10-inches at its eastern edge. This greatly affects the forest and vegetation types across the area.
Cle Elum Ranger District: The Cle Elum Ranger District encompasses approximately 375,000 acres and extends from near the city of Ellensburg and the Yakima River to the crest of the Cascades in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness and Snoqualmie Pass areas. It is bordered by the Wenatchee River Ranger District to the north along the Wenatchee Mountains - Mt. Stuart divide and by the Naches Ranger District to the south along the Manastash Ridge divide. To the west of the district is the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest.

Serves as a technical committee representative to the Gulf Coast Joint Venture. Coordinates and reports TPWD accomplishments to the GCJV Coordinator. Assists regional staff in development of site specific plans related to potential habitat acquisition projects; develops grant proposals for Migratory Wildlife and Wetland Program. Provides leadership in developing in-service habitat management training. Acts as Wildlife Division point of contact with the Texas Prairie Wetlands Project, Wetland Reserve Program and other related programs as assigned. Coordinates public waterfowl hunts on TPWD wildlife management areas as assigned. Other duties include technical assistance to private landowners; develops specific management bulletins, brochures and audiovisual materials on the wetlands and waterfowl for the Division. Serves as the team wetland and waterfowl specialist. Performs additional duties as assigned. Works under minimal supervision, with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Complies with all Agency, Division and Branch rules, regulations and procedures.

Job Requirements
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in Wildlife Science, Wildlife Management, Wildlife Ecology or closely related field in Natural Resources Management. Major course work from Bachelor’s or post-Bachelor’s degree programs must include 24 hours minimum in Wildlife/Habitat Conservation, Wildlife/Natural Resources Management and/or Research from accredited college or university.
Experience:
Five years experience as a professional wildlife biologist, waterfowl biologist, wetland ecologist or closely related natural resources scientist.
Licensure:       
Must possess or be able to obtain, within 30 days of employment, a valid class “C” Texas driver’s license;
Must possess or be able to obtain, within one year of employment, the National Wildfire Coordinator Group’s (NWCG) Fire Fighter Type II certification.
Acceptable Substitutions:

Master’s Degree in Wildlife Science, Wildlife Management, Wildlife Ecology or closely related field in natural Resource Management may substitute for 1 year of the required experience; PhD in Wildlife Science, Wildlife Management, Wildlife Ecology or closely related field in Natural Resource Management may substitute for 2 years of the required experience.

Physical Requirements:
Must be able to pass, within one year of employment, the FFT II moderate duty physical fitness standard (walk 2 miles with a 25 lb pack in 30 minutes or less) OR the arduous duty physical fitness standard (walk 3 miles with 45 lb pack in 45 minutes or less);
Required to conduct (without air sickness) low-level aerial fixed wing aircraft and helicopter surveys. TPWD employees are required to comply with departmental aircraft weight restrictions. Weight limit restrictions prohibit flight with passengers that weigh in excess of 286 pounds. Must maintain less than 287 pounds to accomplish annual low-level aerial surveys.

The Washington Native Plant Society (WNPS) is requesting qualifications from interested persons to serve as Program Manager to establish a new Statewide Native Plant Stewardship Program in coordination with WNPS chapters.  This is a paid contract position and applications will be accepted through June 22, 2015.


Project Description and Scope of Work
This is the initial phase of a multi-year program to establish the institutional arrangements and identify program options and opportunities among 11 active WNPS chapters. The Program Manager will be responsible to the Chair, WNPS Stewardship Steering Committee, established by the State Board of Directors.


1. Program Management
a. Establish program management procedures with steering committee and Administrator
b. Establish work location and work schedule
c. Establish program evaluation and reporting procedures
d. Work with steering committee to identify potential incentives and opportunities for chapters and partners to local stewardship programs. Program Implementation and Information Exchange
e. Establish WNPS email, web and social media options for the statewide stewardship program

I-90 Snoqualmie Pass East Project – Small Mammals

 



Project Summary:  CWU is investigating ecological and genetic connectivity for a variety of vertebrate species before and after wildlife crossing structures are implemented in the I-90 Snoqualmie Pass East project area by Washington State Department of Transportation.  The Small Mammal team led by Dr. Ernest will continue collecting baseline and post-construction data on pikas and other small mammals this year in the project area between Easton and Hyak.  Field activities include conducting occupancy surveys for pikas, measuring pika habitat features, testing pika foraging preferences (graduate student research); live-trapping small mammals, collecting tissue samples for genetic analysis, and measuring habitat use by small mammals.

Job Description:  Approximately 30-40 hours/week for 6-10 weeks (totaling approx. 280 hours) between ~ July 1 and Sept. 1, 2015 (with some flexibility).  Pay rate $14/hr.  Duties may include pika occupancy surveys; live-trapping, marking, and genetic sampling of pikas; assisting graduate student with field experiments on pika foraging; installing sampling grids for pitfall and/or live-trapping of small mammals (insectivores, rodents); habitat measurements on small mammal grids;  surveying for presence of burrowing small mammals, and measuring habitat features; recording GPS coordinates and uploading GPS data; taking detailed field notes and submitting typed copies; entering data in Excel; driving and maintain clean project vehicle; assisting with other CWU I-90 projects. 

Working Conditions:  Field work in pairs or small teams, outside in all weather conditions, on uneven and steep terrain; must be able to walk across talus, hike distances up to 1 mile and carry backpack with equipment up to 40 pounds; may encounter biting insects.  Requires travel from Ellensburg to field sites in project vehicle. Typical work week is 3-4 days, including early morning and late evening hours and 2-3 consecutive nights of camping.  Must be able to work collaboratively in small mammal team.

Sage-Grouse Field Technician

Sage-Grouse Field Technician (1) needed ASAP through 31-July-2015 for a greater sage-grouse study near Roundup, Montana, USA (50 mi north of Billings).  The study will assess biological responses of vegetation and radio-marked sage-grouse adult females and chicks to large-scale grazing treatments on private lands.

This collaborative project is led by Lorelle Berkeley, Ph.D., Research Wildlife Biologist with Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP); Dr. David Naugle, Professor, College of Forestry and Conservation, The University of Montana and Science Advisor to NRCS’s Sage Grouse Initiative (SGI); and Mark Szczypinski, Research Technician (Sage-Grouse Field Crew Leader), FWP.

Duties potentially include, but are not limited to, conducting lek counts (April through May), night-time capture of sage-grouse hens or chicks and marking them with radio transmitters, capture of hens using rocket nets, monitoring nest success and hen and chick survival via radiotelemetry, collection of vegetation data, data entry and proofreading, maintaining field vehicles, and other miscellaneous duties as needed. Preference will be given to applicants with experience in radiotelemetry and in operation of 4WD trucks and ATVs on low-maintenance roads. Successful applicants may be asked to help collect vegetation data with the range field technicians as needed.  Applicants must enjoy working and living in a remote rural area with a diverse group of people including private landowners and livestock producers.

Conditions include extreme temperatures, rain, snow, “gumbo” roads, wind, rattlesnakes, and abundant prickly pear.  Work schedule is extremely dynamic and demanding, including late nights, early mornings, some long days during the peak of nests hatching or chick tagging, split work shifts and unpredictable days off—applicants must be willing to work when needed and take days off when the opportunity arises. The rewards include the endless vistas of central Montana, abundant outdoor recreation opportunities within a short (1-2 hour) drive, calf branding and roadside chats with ranchers, phenomenal wildlife viewing, and wildlife research experience.

Project Summary:
The greater sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) is a sagebrush-obligate species that was designated as warranted for protection under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) in 2010 but precluded due to higher priority species. The loss and degradation of the sagebrush habitats has led to extirpation of this species from over half of its historical range.   In 2015 the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will make a final listing decision for the sage-grouse.  To help avoid a listing, the U.S. Department of Agriculture – Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) recently implemented the Sage-Grouse Initiative (SGI) program, which provides incentives to private landowners within key areas to help them modify their ranches and grazing systems to improve sage-grouse habitat and populations.  Our goal is to evaluate the effects of SGI grazing systems on sage-grouse vital rates, distribution, and habitats , and to inform NRCS’s grazing programs by recommending modifications (if needed) that can benefit sage-grouse.   We are focusing on a representative sage-grouse population and network of SGI-enrolled land in central MT.  Viability analyses suggest that adult female survival, chick survival, and nest success are the vital rates that contribute most to population growth.  Thus we use radiotelemetry to monitor hen survival and habitat use, nest success and nest-site selection, and chick survival and habitat use.  Findings will inform federal and state grazing management programs as well as landowners that incorporate wildlife interests into grazing management around the West.

JOB SUMMARY
The Yakima River Basin Conservation Associate plays an important role in building and maintaining support for the Yakima Basin Integrated Plan (“Yakima Plan”) and its implementation, primarily through outreach, communications, media, and coordination of Yakima Plan supporters.  75% of this position serves the multi-stakeholder Yakima Plan Implementation and Executive Committees, and 25% serves American Rivers in the Yakima and Columbia Basins.

·         Work with key Yakima Plan stakeholders to create an outreach and communications plan to increase awareness and support for the Yakima Plan by local, state, and federal decision makers and the general public on both sides of the Cascades.

Little Pend Oreille National Wildlife Refuge Student Internship 2015

The US Fish and Wildlife Service at Little Pend Oreille National Wildlife Refuge is accepting resumes for a student internship during the summer of 2015. The internship is expected to last 11 weeks. The period is anticipated to run from late May to early August but specific dates will be negotiated once a candidate is selected.  The refuge is located in NE Washington and encompasses more than 40,000 acres of forested habitats. It lies in the Selkirk Mountains, one of the western most chains of the Rockies. It is drained by several small streams and includes three fishing lakes. The focus of the position is wildlife habitat management but will also assist with hands on wildlife management activities.  The selected candidate will gain experience in forest management, refuge management.

While field experience is not required, a successful candidate will be working toward or recently completed a bachelor’s degree in biology, wildlife, forestry, botany or related area. He/she should be able to work independently as well as part of team.

Compensation: 
For interns whose residence is greater than 50 miles from refuge headquarters east of Colville, the Refuge provides $175 per week stipend for 11 weeks. However, this stipend may be reduced or eliminated at any time due to budgetary constraints or service policy revisions. Living quarters in a bunkhouse environment are also provided. Transportation to and from the refuge is the responsibility of the intern. It is an excellent opportunity to gain practical experience on a national wildlife refuge working with friendly, knowledgeable, and supportive staff.

Pre-med and Pre-Therapy Students
Summer Shadow Program
Kadlec Regional Medical Center (Richland Washington)


This program will allow students, who are/have been enrolled in college coursework preparing them to enter a Medical or Therapy program, to complete 80 hours of job shadowing at KRMC.  The WSHA recommends that Pre-Med students get at least 40 hours of job shadowing prior to applying to Medical School and most Therapy Schools require up to 90 hours of observation prior to applying.  As an organization, Kadlec wants to assist these students in meeting their educational requirements and give them a jump start in their chosen field.

The program will allow for 21 Pre-Med and 9 Pre-Therapy students to get 80 hours of job shadowing over 4 weeks (20 hours a week, roughly) at KRMC.  There will be an application/interview and orientation process to ensure we accommodate those students who are truly working toward a Medical or Therapy school placement and to fully prepare them to encounter Kadlec’s patient population during their observation experience.  Participants will get to spend time with two Provider Mentors which offers them a diverse and well-rounded experience, including both in-patient and out-patient locations.  The program will also include a Professional Workshop in the middle of the summer to allow them to ask questions of Providers and other students, to learn about professional ethics/development, and offer them other valuable tools to use toward their educational endeavors.

Job Description:
Select Botanicals Group, LLC is looking for a limited number of individuals for our summer internship program in the heart of hop country. The focus of this internship will be to work in the quality management program, ensuring the highest quality hops for our customers.

Interns should plan on spending 40+ hours per week working in the field (mostly walking and scouting for off type varieties), and 8-10+ hours per week on learning opportunities including brewing beer on a pilot system, learning about commercial hop production and breeding, touring and brewing in a commercial brewery, and much more. Restoration Crew Leader

Mid-Columbia Fisheries Enhancement Group seeks to fill a seasonal position of Restoration Crew Leader to work out of the Ellensburg office, supervising technicians, interns, and volunteers.  The position will require a minimum of 31 week commitment from April to October, working on average 4-10 hour days per week.

U.S. Geological Survey Field Technician

Candidates without 1 months experience sampling and identifying plant species will not be considered.

Department of Fish and Wildlife Scientific Technician I

The Department of Fish and Wildlife is recruiting to fill four (4) full time, non-permanent, Scientific Technician 1 seasonal field positions located in the Habitat Program. The duty station is in the Natural Resources Building, Olympia, Thurston County.

Position Duration:  4.5 months (with possible extension pending funding up to 8 months)

Anticipated start date:  February 16 2015, through June 30 2015. The workweek will be Monday through Thursday, 7:00 AM to approximately 5:00 PM.

Location:  While the duty station is in Olympia, fieldwork occurs throughout the Chehalis River Basin and employees can expect to spend approximately 100% of their time in the field (4 days/week) returning daily to Olympia.

These seasonal (non-permanent) positions support field research surveying for stream-associated salamanders in the upper Chehalis River Basin, and surveying off-channel wetlands in the Chehalis River floodplain for both fish (native and nonnative) and amphibians. The sampling is a segment of a Dam Impacts Study that will document what species are present in current riparian areas and floodplain that will be inundated if a dam was constructed and what species of fish and amphibians in off-channel wetlands may be affected by reduced flows downstream from such a dam.

Environmental and Conservation Internship

Seattle City Light, a department of the City of Seattle, is one of the nation’s largest municipally owned utilities in terms of the number of customers served.  Depending on the duties of the specific internship, Environmental and Conservation interns can expect to:

• learn about electric utility environmental issues, such as tracking, reporting on and handling of greenhouse gases, system operations and field techniques for fish protection, and the use of GPS and GIS systems.
