Central Washington University is a regionally accredited institution by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU). The NWCCU is one of six regional accrediting associations that are recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Institutional accreditation is important as it is recognition for performance, integrity, and quality to merit the confidence of the educational community and the public. Accreditation is also important as it qualifies institutions and enrolled students for access to federal funds to support teaching, research, and student financial aid.
Institutional accreditation is regularly reviewed and renewed (or "reaffirmed") by the NWCCU. This reaffirmation occurs through regular reports and site visits. In addition to these reports and visits, CWU also communicates regularly with the NWCCU about new programs and changes to institutional leaders and organizational structure.
CWU's institutional accreditation was last reaffirmed in January, 2010, as a result of an accreditation report and site visit in the fall, 2009. The accreditation reaffirmation process has significantly changed so that it is completed in a seven year cycle and through biannual reports and visits. Chapter one presents CWU's Mission, Core Themes, and Expectations. This chapter describes what the university sets out to do, and how we will use data to make improvements and confirm that we are achieving our mission.

In subsequent reports, the university will update prior submissions and add chapters on Resources and Capacity, Planning and Implementation, Effectiveness and Improvement, and Mission Fulfillment, Adaptation, and Sustainability. This cycle will run from 2011 to 2017, with reports in odd years. In addition to reports, there will be site visits in 2013 and 2017.
