True Blue exhibit opens in Sarah Spurgeon Gallery on Thursday, April 3
ELLENSBURG, Wash. — The CWU Sarah Spurgeon Gallery will host True Blue, an exhibit of recent works on paper by Natalya Burd and Maya Chachava. The opening events will take place on Thursday, April 3, beginning with an artists’ lecture at 4:00 p.m. in Randall Hall, room 117. The lecture will be immediately followed by a reception in the gallery from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Maya Chachava’s work will also be on view at Gallery One Visual Arts during the month of April. “Travel Diaries” will open at Gallery One on Friday, April 4, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. as part of the Ellensburg First Friday Art Walk.
Maya Chachava’s mixed-media prints trace back real or imagined childhood memories through the manipulation of family photographs. She uses a multilayered process of digital imagery, printmaking, and drawing to create a dense, mark-making surface. Chachava is the Associate Professor of Drawing and Painting in the CWU Department of Art, where she has worked since 2005. She was born in Tbilisi, in the Republic of Georgia, and later moved to the United States where she received her M.F.A. in painting from the University of Washington in 2000.
Natalya Burd is a professional artist born in Bishkek, in the Kyrgyz Republic, who currently lives in San Jose, California. Burd, who was a young girl during the collapse of the former Soviet Union, is fascinated with the contrast between the beauty of the natural world and the brutality of human behavior. She works from historical photographs of soldiers and hunters, as well as from nature, to apply ink and metallic paint to paper. Burd has studied painting at the Moscow University of Art and Art History, Oregon State University, and the University of Washington.
True Blue will remain on display through April 20. Sarah Spurgeon Gallery is located in Randall Hall on Dean Nicholson Boulevard and is open weekdays 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and on weekends, 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Admission is free.
