ELLENSBURG, Wash. — The CWU Sarah Spurgeon Gallery will feature Please Touch, Pick Up, and Arrange, the Master of Fine Arts thesis exhibition by Matthew Armbrust. The public opening reception will take place on Wednesday, May 28, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Armbrust’s current body of work includes approximately one hundred functional ceramic vessels. The vessels are highly textured and often include literary allusion in order to more deeply engage viewers through their form and surface.
As the title of the exhibition suggests, visitors are encouraged to touch and interact directly with the fragile works in the gallery. Armbrust hopes that allowing people to create their own arrangements of his artwork will result in a joyful experience:
“All of my artistic goals for this body of work are for naught if the work is not interacted with. So when in the Sarah Spurgeon Gallery during my show Please Touch, Pick Up, and Arrange these vessels as you deem fit for your own needs.”
Matthew Armbrust received his B.A. in Music from Central Washington University. He lives in Twisp, Washington, where he is a resident artist for the Methow Arts Alliance.
The exhibition will remain on display through June 13. Sarah Spurgeon Gallery is located in Randall Hall on Dean Nicholson Boulevard and is open weekdays 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and on weekends, 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Admission is free.
