Opening Reception: INTERSTATE Exhibit

Thursday, Nov 5, 2015
5:00 pm to 7:00 pm

The Sarah Spurgeon Gallery will host INTERSTATE: Where I-90 meets I-82, a national juried exhibition organized by the CWU Department of Art. The juror for the exhibition is Jennifer Navva Milliken, Curator of Craft at the Bellevue Arts Museum, who selected work by 36 artists. The opening events will take place on Thursday, November 5, beginning with a lecture by Millikin at 4:00 p.m. in Randall Hall, room 117. Her lecture will be followed by a reception in the gallery from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

The award winners include Laura Buchan from Portland, Oregon, whose untitled cherry wood sculpture received the first place award. Juventino Aranda, from Walla Walla, Washington, won second place for “Rollin’ in Peace (R.I.P.),” a conceptual sculpture that features a modified Radio Flyer wagon and a Nintendo 64 game console controller. David Friedman, also from Portland, Oregon, received third place for his meticulously hand-cut papercut “Fire on the Mountain.”

Honorable mentions were awarded to David Alvarez (Walla Walla, Washington), Claire B. Jones (Seattle, Washington), and Bobi Wilson (Richland, Washington).

Proceeds from the artists’ entry fees for INTERSTATE: Where I-90 meets I-82 support student scholarships in the CWU Department of Art. The exhibition will remain on view through December 6 (the gallery will be closed November 25 through 29 for Thanksgiving break). Sarah Spurgeon Gallery is located in Randall Hall on Dean Nicholson Boulevard and is open weekdays 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and on weekends, 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Admission is free.
