The Department of Anthropology and Museum Studies aims to provide every department major with the opportunity for an immersive and transformative “Study Away” experience. Study Away, which includes study abroad experiences, may be international or domestic. Study Away experiences immerse students in a world outside of their familiar experiences, exposing them to new perspectives as they live and work with others, and learn about social and cultural worlds, past or present. Such experiences are particularly relevant to Anthropology as a discipline dedicated to developing empathetic understandings of human diversity and shared humanity. An impactful study away experience can open up new worlds of possibility for our students for what they might do with their “one wild and precious life” (Mary Oliver).

Pete and Sandra Barlow provide generous funding toward realizing this goal. Opportunities may include, but are not limited to,

  • participation in domestic or international volunteer programs,
  • internship programs,
  • participation in domestic or international field school programs, including CWU programs,
  • study abroad programs,
  • or an individualized “project away” linked to credit-bearing work at CWU (with credit earned either prior to, during, or following the award).

If you are not sure how an opportunity that you are interested in might qualify, please talk to a department faculty member.

Note: You can receive this award only once during your years in the major.
