First and second year students, that are in the Air Force ROTC have a chance to earn a scholarship through what is know as the "In-College Scholarship Program." Depending upon the availability of Air Force funds, this program can really make a difference to those that work hard in school and Air Force ROTC. During this first go-around, called Phase I, three of Det 895's finest earned all tuition paid, up to $900 a year for books and a tax-free stipend ($300-$500 a month). This is a national competition and therefore only a few out of those that are nominated received a scholarship. Cadets that are taking technical majors tend to get the lion's share of the scholarships. However, the three that won were not in technical majors; but instead majors like criminal justice and resource management. "You have to keep trying and don't give up," remarked one of the winners during his contracting ceremony. Of all the 80+ cadets in the Air Force ROTC at CWU, only 30% have scholarships.
