The CWU Center for Diversity and Social Justice (CDSJ) and the Department of Education present Family Literacy Night Wednesday, Feb. 19 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in Michaelsen room 126. This event is free and open to the public. CWU teacher candidates enrolled in EDLT 321, Teaching Children's Literature, will read to the children at this great opportunity to bring the family together for a fun night of reading. 02/25/2014 - Weight Loss Wonder Woman Sharee Samuels Shares Her Story at CWU

For an incredibly inspirational story don?t miss Central graduate student and certified group fitness instructor Sharee Samuels as she shares her weight loss story at CWU Tuesday, Feb. 25 at 7:30 p.m. in the Student Union and Recreation Center (SURC) Ballroom. Samuels battled weight loss and won, losing approximately half her body weight when she went from 256 to 135 pounds. Campus Activities will host Samuels as she shares her triumphant story at this free event. Samuels was recently featured on the cover of People Magazine for her accomplishments, and has garnered a large fan base on Instagram, tumblr and her blog ?Funeral for My Fat.? The audience will have the opportunity to ask Samuels questions, and she will have a merchandise table as well as a table for brochures of her recipes, nutritional facts and motivation for healthy lifestyles. Don?t miss the chance to be inspired and take away tips on how to become happier, healthier and more active. 02/28/2014 - Live Music at CWU: An Evening with Penny and Sparrow

Rock/folk band Penny and Sparrow is set to perform at CWU Friday, Feb. 28 at 7 p.m. in the Student Union and Recreation Center (SURC) Pit. Admission is free and open to the public. Previously roommates, Andy Baxter and Kyle Jahnke put their talents together to create Penny and Sparrow. The duo can be compared to American indie-folk band Bon Iver and English folk-rock band Mumford & Sons. The band released their first full-length album, ?Tenboom,? last year using a Kickstarter protect and were able to raise over $5,000 thanks to some very supportive and devoted fans. With music that steers away from overly produced gimmicks, Penny and Sparrow?s sound focuses on rich harmonies and intimate lyrics to draw in listeners. Are you ready to get Mean & Lean in '14!?

The Kittitas County Chamber of Commerce along with RSVP & Volunteer Center of Kittitas County are excited to announce the beginning of this year’s Mean & Lean program! Last year was a huge success with over 100 participants with a total combined weight loss of 847.7 pounds!
 
With your registration you will receive a free weight loss journal (first 200 participants) and a Mean & Lean button, which you can wear to numerous local businesses to get discounts and special deals (Details coming soon)
 
12 Prizes will be awarded to the top male & female participants based on Percentage % of weight loss at the end of the program
 
13th prize: participants that attend all weigh ins will be entered into a drawing for a special 13th prize
 
Optional Weigh ins: Participants who attend each optional weigh in will be entered into a drawing to win prizes on that day regardless of weight change
 
We will be kicking off the program with the First weigh in and registration for Mean & Lean in ’14 on February 5th
 
 The Location of the weigh ins will be
The Adult Activity Center (506 S Pine St.)
 
On each weigh in day,
 you can drop by to weigh in within the following times:
6:45am-7:45am,
11:30am-1:15pm,
or 4:30pm-6:00pm
 
The weigh in dates are every third Wednesday
Starting on February 5th and going until May 14th

February 26th
March 19th
April 9th
April 30th
May 14th (Final Weigh in!)
 
The price for those who participated last year is $25.00! If you are new to the program or know someone who wants to participate for the first time this year the cost is $40.00

The Outdoor Speaker Series wraps up with an exciting story from brothers Michael and David Hanson Thursday, Feb. 27 at 7 p.m. in the SURC Theatre. The brothers paddled the length of the Chattahoochee-Flint-Apalachicola Rivers in Georgia, Alabama and Florida on a 30-day canoe trip last year on a mission to find out who owns the water and make sure this essential resource isn't depleted. This event is free and open to the public. A community forum on A Living Wage will be held at 3 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 22 in the Social Hall of the First United Methodist Church.  The public is invited; admission is free.  Two economists, David Hedrick, Professor of Economics at CWU and Richard Mack, Professor Emeritus of Economics, CWU, will speak to such questions as, what is a living wage, what would be its economic impact, and should the minimum wage be a living wage.
