Join CWU for a groundbreaking public education program that helps the public identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders. This course is an 8 hour course which uses role playing and simulations to demonstrate how to assess a mental health crisis; select interventions and provide initial help; and connect persons to professional, peer, social, and self-help care. This program also teaches about the risk factors and warning signs of specific illnesses like anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, eating disorders, and addictions.

It?s time again for CWU?s annual Homecoming dance, hosted by the Residence Hall Association (RHA). 88.1 The ?Burg will bring the music, and are sure to get all attendees out on the dance floor. Students, alumni and guests are all invited to attend Friday, Oct. 17 from 9 to 11:30 p.m. in the CWU Student Union and Recreation Center (SURC) Ballroom. 10/18/2014 - Hiking - Cooper River Trail to Cooper Lake

This peaceful, relatively flat hike follows Cooper River to Cooper Lake. 3.5 miles one way, Hikers will be guided along a beautiful trail that will take them through old growth forest with bursts of wildflowers. Along the way, there is plenty of opportunity to view the river and enjoy and learn about the many species of birds and wildlife that thrive in this area. The trail ends at the crystal clear mountain lake, and hikers will be shuttled back to CWU. This is a great hike for beginners or families with children.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast cancer affects 1 in 8 women. Do you know where to go locally if you or someone you love needs help? Plan to stop by KVH Hospital for the Cancer Support Open House on Tuesday, October 14. Learn what is available locally for those affected by breast cancer: community resources, fundraising and awareness, mammograms, nutrition, therapies, support groups and programs. The October 14 open house runs from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

Bev Allenbaugh emcees a public forum featuring local candidates up for election in November. The forum is scheduled to begin at 7:00 pm at the Swauk-Teanaway Grange Hall, 1361 Ballard Hill Road near Cle Elum. Everyone is invited. Candidates include Nick Henderson and Scott Hammond (running for county coroner), Deanna Panattoni and Brett Wachsmith (county treasurer), Obie O?Brien and Steve Verhey (county commissioner position 3), Sarah Keith and Val Barschaw (county clerk). Refreshments will be served.

Mr. and Ms. Central Tuesday, Oct. 14 7:30 p.m. SURC Ballroom Free There?s much more to Homecoming week than just a football game, including a variety of great entertainment. Competitors in the annual RHA sponsored Mr. and Ms. Central talent competition will wow the crowd with their singing, dancing and comedic talent Tuesday, Oct. 14 at 7:30 p.m. in the Student Union and Recreation Center (SURC) Ballroom. Each year students in CWU residence halls compete to be selected Mr. and Ms. of their hall. From there, the students go on to compete in the big show and vie for the crowns of Mr. and Ms. Central. Everyone is invited to watch the winners of each residence hall face off for the title of Mr. and Ms. Central at this free show.
