11/13/2014 - Unheard Voices: Warming the Winter

Nov. 4, 2014) The CWU Center for Leadership and Community Engagement (CLCE) and Growth International Volunteer Excursions' (GIVE) program are teaming up to host "Unheard Voices: Warming the Winter" Thursday, Nov. 13 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at D&M Coffee downtown, on the corner of Pine and 3rd Streets. Unheard Voices is a quarterly program where CLCE works to bring awareness and support to a variety of causes, both locally and internationally. This year, the event will combine live music from local talent with a coat, hat, glove and scarf drive to benefit Abuse Support and Prevention Education Now (ASPEN) abuse victims in Kittitas County. The music lineup includes CWU students David Stevens, Tabitha Hardy, Joshua Arquette-Rotman and community member Kyle Bain. 

Those unable to attend can drop off gently used items at one of these locations: Ellensburg Public Library, CWU Student Union and Recreation Center (SURC) room 256, SURC Pit, D&M Coffee downtown, D&M Coffee on Water St. and Super 1 Foods.

Join the CWU Center for Diversity and Social Justice (CDSJ) in celebrating diversity at its finest at the 9th annual CWU Parade of Nations. Watch as students, staff and faculty all unite to showcase cultural dances and musical performances from around the world Thursday, Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. in the Student Union and Recreation Center (SURC) Ballroom. This event is free and open to the public.
 
Students and faculty wishing to join the parade can sign up at the Center for Diversity and Social Justice (CDSJ) in SURC 250/253, or by emailing diversity@cwu.edu. Deadline for registration is Friday Oct. 31. Rehearsals will be Nov. 12 at 5 p.m. and Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. in the SURC Ballroom.

CWU Intramural Sports and Special Events challenge Ellensburg?s strongest to The Manastash Challenge, a ?strongman competition? that promises to push challengers to their limits. On Tuesday, Nov. 11 at 3 p.m. at Manastash Ridge, the challenge will present an obstacle course testing the strength and endurance of participants. The Manastash Challenge is open to both students and the public for a $5 fee, and pre-registration is available at the CWU Student Union and Recreation Center (SURC) access desk. To promote acceptance of people of all intellectual abilities, the CWU Students Council for Exceptional Children (SCEC) has joined the national ?Spread the Word to End the Word? campaign, which works to stop the use of the ?R-word? to describe individuals with intellectual disabilities. On Wednesday, Nov. 12 and Thursday, Nov. 13, SCEC will host a ?Spread the Word to End the Word? event from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the CWU Student Union and Recreation Center (SURC) West Patio. Attendance is free, and the community is invited. 88.1 The ?Burg will be playing music during the event, and attendees will have the opportunity to learn why the ?R-word? is socially unacceptable, as well as sign the pledge to stop using it at the ?Spread the Word to End the Word? website. The Special Olympics launched the ?Spread the Word to End the Word? campaign in 2008, and since then, the campaign has successfully raised awareness of the negative connotations of the ?R-word,? and why its use is hurtful to those with intellectual disabilities. SCEC serves as advocates for ?person first language,? which aims to describe people accurately, not negatively.
