12/08/2016 - Banff Mountain Film Festival

The Banff Centre is bringing films that explore every aspect of mountain culture, including footage of the some of the greatest winter sports action ever recorded. This year, CWU’s Outdoor Pursuits and Rentals wants everyone to enjoy the mountain culture by hosting the Banff Mountain Film Festival on campus in the SURC Theatre on Thursday, Dec. 8. The doors will open at 6 p.m. and the film will start at 7 p.m. The films will last around two hours with a 15-minute intermission. There will be giveaways from Banff and OPR for attendees. Tickets brought before the event are $12 for CWU students (with ID) and $16 for general admission. All tickets will cost $18 on the day of the event. Grange members provide roasted turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, gravy and dessert - just bring a side dish to share. What began as Grange members sharing a holiday meal has grown into a large gathering of community members enjoying a delicious meal and festive holiday entertainment.

Young performers from Dance Craze will be on stage performing dance routines during dessert. Then YOU will join in singing a few favorite carols.

The food will be delicious; the music will get you into the holiday spirit, and the sense of community is guaranteed to be absolutely wonderful!

Please join a “Not in Our Kittitas County” Community Event on Tuesday, Nov. 29 at 5:30 p.m. in the Student Union Ballroom. Central Washington University and the Ellensburg community are joining together to address hate with presentations and open discussion. The keynote speaker Richard King, a Critical Culture and Gender and Race Studies professor at WSU, will present “Understanding Racial Violence and Intimidation: White Supremacist Movements in the Pacific Northwest.” Lecia J. Brooks, from the Southern Poverty Law Center will give an update (via Skype) on Klan and white supremacists’ activity in Washington State and the Pacific Northwest, as well as strategies for responding to hate incidents. Cynthia Mitchell, CWU Communications Department, and students from the First Amendment Class will present on “Freedom for the Speech we hate.” Following the presentations, there will be an open discussion including input from the Ellensburg and CWU Police Department; Dale Miller (EPD Chief), Clay Meyes (Undersheriff) and Mike Luvera (CWU Police). Facing Homelessness Wednesday, Nov. 30th 6:30 • SURC Theatre Admission - Food contribution to support the PUSH campaign Open to everyone Rex Hoglbein, executive director of Facing Homelessness will hold a public presentation on Wednesday Nov. 30 at 6:30 p.m. in the Student Union and Recreation Center Theatre. During his talk, he will outline strategies to resolve the issue of homelessness, such as sharing funds, resources, or simply, time. Based on the latest state Department of Commerce Point in Time survey, there were 599 homeless people in Kittitas, Yakima, Chelan, Douglas, and Grant counties. But that winter figure is low, usually in central Washington numbers rise dramatically during the warm summer weather.   The event will involve a community panel discussion, moderated by Philip Kerrigan, the state’s Combined Fund Drive (CFD) program manager. While the presentation is free and open to the public, those attending are encouraged to bring a food donation for the local Presidents United to Solve Hunger (PUSH) campaign. CWU’s Facing Homelessness is being held in conjunction with the university’s annual participation in the CFD, which is Washington state’s official workplace giving program for active and retired public employees. Larson added the goal is to have CWU personnel volunteer 2,000 community service hours before the end of the year to address economic and social challenges, or enhance the quality of life locally.
