Esteemed emcee and social justice activist, Jasiri X will be speaking and preforming at CWU May 3 at 7 p.m. in the SURC Ballroom. Jasiri X has toured colleges and universities around the country presenting innovative workshops, serving as a panelist and delivering keynote addresses. The event is free and open to all. Jasiri X is a modern millennium Civil Rights activist in addition to being an educator and musician. He has worked closely alongside his mentor, the singer and social activist Harry Belafonte, to address the social ills of today?s society in a multitude of public platforms. Jasiri X is the recipient of the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation Artist as Activist Fellowship, BMe Fellowship, The August Wilson Center for African-American culture fellowship and most recently chosen as a United States Cummings fellow. A new millennium leader and esteemed musician, Jasiri X has leveraged the power of hip hop and social media into his own brand of social change. Witness what has gained Jasiri X notoriety, his ability to succinctly address issues surrounding the disenfranchised of America via his hard hitting lyricism and powerful speeches. Ellensburg, WA, the gateway to the Yakima River, will host the 10th Annual Washington Fly Fishing Fair on for April 29th & 30th, 2016. The event features fly-tying demonstrations, casting classes, seminars on myriad topics, vendor displays, and a Fly Casting Obstacle Course that will allow you to test your skills and hone your techniques.
 Dave Hughes author and fly tyer will be our guest presenter and give a Wet Fly Tying workshop. In addition, private lessons with a certified casting instructor will be available for a fee. Youth Workshop, Saturday 9 AM to 3 PM -Introduction to Fly Fishing including tying and casting.  Each student will receive a fly rod outfit and lunch.  Limited to 20 students (12-16), $40. All day Saturday there will be free fly tying for those interested in trying their hand at tying flies.
The WSCIFFF Awards Banquet takes place Friday night. The Fly Fishing Fair takes place at the Kittitas Valley Event Center in the Fairgrounds.

To help the CWU and local communities become active citizens and educated voters, the Center for Leadership and Community Engagement (CLCE) is set to host College Civics Week with events Monday, May 2 through Thursday, May 5. All events are free and open to the public. With panel discussions, debates and educational activities, getting involved in the week?s activities is a must for everyone. All week, there will be displays and tabling throughout the Student Union and Recreation Center (SURC) displaying information about student government candidates, the week?s events, legislature history, civic education and more, such as a quiz that places your beliefs on the political spectrum. College Civics Week Schedule of Events: Monday, May 2 Senator Patty Murray Video All Day | SURC Pit A video, made by Senator Patty Murray for Central students, will play throughout the day. Donkey vs Elephant Match 6 - 7 p.m. | SURC Pit Votes can be cast, for either the Democratic or Republican Party, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and the results of the poll will be revealed by who wins the Donkey vs Elephant Match. Tuesday, May 3 College Democrats and College Republicans Debate 12 - 1:30 p.m. | SURC Pit Two CWU clubs will debate, as a way to educate voters, with a focus on higher education. Wednesday, May 4 State Representative Speaker Panel 12 - 1:30 p.m. | SURC Pit Learn about important and current issues with State Representatives from both parties. 04/28/2016 - Katherine Beckett: How We Created Mass Incarceration and How It Can Be Reversed

As the United States has one of the highest prison rates per capita, incarceration is becoming a widely discussed topic. To share her insight, Katherine Beckett, Ph.D., will be giving a talk titled How We Created Mass Incarceration and How It Can Be Reversed. A sociology professor at the University of Washington, Beckett provides in-depth criticism on America?s criminal justice system, particularly on how marginalized groups?including women, adolescents and people of color?are increasingly imprisoned. Beckett?s research, books and articles emphasize causes and consequences of the U.S. prison system, exploring both political and social factors. Among Becketts awards and honors for her work include the University of Washington?s Public Service Award. She presently works with the King County Prosecuting Attorney?s Office, Northwest Defenders Association and is serving two years with the Seattle Human Rights Commission. Beckett?s appearance is part of the CWU Social Justice and Human Rights Series. This years inaugural theme, Mass Incarceration and Racial Justice: Black and Brown Lives Do Matter, aims to educate Central?s community and initiate discussions about race.

Passionate about providing all students with educational opportunities, Tyrone Bledsoe, Ph.D., will be speaking at CWU. Founder and CEO of the Student African American Brotherhood (SAAB), Bledsoe works with students and schools across the nation. Though focused on supporting men of color, the organization welcomes students of any race, gender and background. Last year, Bledsoe visited Central to help establish the first Brother 2 Brother (B2B) chapter in the Pacific Northwest. The organization?s primary goals include encouraging leadership, preparing its members for the workforce and motivating them to reach their full potentials. In addition to establishing SAAB, Bledsoe is renowned for his scholarly work. He has been called a highly motivational speaker and invited for guest lectures around the world, including to Oxford University. Bledsoe was a contributing author for the book ?African American Men in College.? Among his several honors are the Impact Award and recognition by the global association for social entrepreneurs, Ashoka. With years of experience as an educator, Bledsoe will provide valuable insight on how to support the academic success of young men of color. Bledsoe?s appearance is part of the CWU Social Justice and Human Rights Series. This year?s inaugural theme, "Mass Incarceration and Racial Justice: Black and Brown Lives Do Matter," aims to educate Central?s community and initiate discussions about race.
