Introduction to design and production of various instructional materials from manual to more complex computer techniques.

Principles of developing a school learning resources collection, including both print and non print materials. Topics to be included are development of a materials selection policy, intellectual freedom issues, selection tools, and appropriate tools and strategies in the selection process.

The nature of literature for children and young adults, how to develop a literature collection, and how to promote it.

Instructional methods used by library media specialists in their work, e.g., independent learning skills, literacy appreciation, visual literacy, reading motivation, creative drama, puppetry, storytelling, authoring software, presentation skills, etc.

Note: All students are expected to complete a 2-credit 60-hour practicum. This course is listed as EDCS 596 on your schedule.

Principles and techniques of cataloging, classifying, and assigning subject headings to books and other media; including automation sources and requirements with an emphasis on the preparation of the MARC record.

Explores recent research, experimental programs and new developments in the utilization of media. Students will gain hands on experience in using technology for library media.

Reference tools, information sources, and the use of the Internet and other databases for the retrieval of information on all forms of media will be explored as well as the principles of storing and circulating materials, including computerized circulation systems.

Develop skills and expertise needed to manage media/technology programs, including managing budgets and personnel; evaluating, writing specifications for, and ordering software and equipment.
