Richard Opoku

Academic and Retention Advisor for Online Programs

Richard grew up in Ghana, in the Ashanti Region. In 2004, he was awarded a full athletic scholarship to attend Virginia Commonwealth University. Richard graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy with Creative Writing Minor in 2005. He went on to pursue a Master of Science Degree which he completed in 2007.

He joined the VCU Athletic Department on a full-time basis in 2007 as an academic advisor. Prior to his full-time appointment, Richard served as a graduate assistant and coordinator of the first student-athlete peer mentoring program for student-athlete support services during the 2005-06 academic year.

Richard understands the know-how of balancing a busy schedule of being a Division I student-athlete as well as a high-caliber student after first-hand playing experience with men's soccer at VCU, including being a stand-out in the 2004 NCAA Tournament quarterfinal run for the Rams.

With 10 years of experience in higher education in the capacity of Academic Advisor, Student-Athlete Mentoring and Transfer Equivalency Coordinator.
