Richard Opoku

Academic and Retention Advisor for Online Programs

Richard grew up in Ghana, in the Ashanti Region. In 2004, he was awarded full athletic scholarship to attend Virginia Commonwealth University. Richard graduated with Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy with Creative Writing Minor in 2005. He went on to pursue Master of Science Degree which he completed in 2007.

He joined the VCU Athletic Department on a full-time basis in 2007 as an academic advisor. Prior to his full-time appointment, Richard served as a graduate assistant  and coordinator of the first student-athlete peer mentoring program for student athlete support services during the 2005-06 academic year.

Richard understands the know-how of balancing busy schedule of being a Division I student-athlete as well as a high-caliber student after first-hand playing experience with men's soccer at VCU, including being a stand-out in the 2004 NCAA Tournament quarter final run for the Rams.

With 10 years of experience in higher education in the capacity of Academic Advisor, Student- Athlete Mentoring and Transfer Equivalency Coordinator.
