Math & English Eligibility

English

To determine your eligibility for English 101, choose the appropriate test score range.

SAT

  • 500 and above
    Scores of 500 or above on the Verbal portion of the SAT make a student eligible to take English 101.
  • 400-499
    Scores of 499 or below on the Verbal portion of the SAT are below eligibility requirements for English 101. Students who have a 499 or below may take the Accuplacer Reading Comprehension and WritePlacer test to see if they can score high enough to be placed in English 101 or they may take English 100T.  Any incoming first year student with a score of 499 or lower who is attending orientation, should be prepared to take the Accuplacer Reading Comprehension and WritePlacer.

ACT

  • 19 and above
    Scores of 19 or above on the English portion of the ACT make a student eligible to take English 101.
  • 18 and below
    Scores of 18 or below on the English portion of the ACT are below eligibility requirements for English 101. Students who score below may take the Accuplacer Reading Comprehension and WritePlacer test to see if they can score high enough to be placed in English 101 or they may take English 100T.  Any incoming first year student with a score of 18 or lower who is attending orientation, should be prepared to take the Accuplacer Reading Comprehension and WritePlacer.

 

Accuplacer

  • Earning a minimum score of 5 on the WritePlacer and 95 on the Reading Comprehension test makes a student eligible for English 101. A student may only take these tests twice at CWU.  The following web site provides information and examples to help students prepare to take the Accuplacer tests necessary to become eligible for English 101: www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/accuplacer/accuplacer-tests.html . Students who do not achieve an 95 or higher on the Reading Comprehension as well as an 5 on the WritePlacer will be required to take English 100T (transitional writing skills). Passing this course qualifies a student for English 101.

 

Math

Many majors require specific math courses. Please review the current CWU Course Catalog to determine your intended major's math requirements.

SAT

  • 500 and above
    Scores of 500 or above on the Mathematics portion of the SAT make a student eligible for Math 100C*, 101, 102, 130, or 164**.
  • 499 or below
    Scores of 499 or below on the Math portion of the SAT are below eligibility requirements for university level mathematics. Students who have a 499 or below are allowed to take the Accuplacer placement test.  Any incoming freshman with a score of 499 or below who is attending an orientation will be required to take Accuplacer test.

ACT

  • 19 and above
    Scores of 19 or above on the Mathematics portion of the ACT make a student eligible for Math 100C*, 101, 102, 130 or 164**. .
  • 18 or below
    Scores of 18 or below on the Math portion of the ACT are below eligibility requirements for university level mathematics. Students who have an 18 or below are allowed to take the Accuplacer placement test. Any incoming freshman with a score of 18 or below who is attending an orientation will be required to take Accuplacer test.

 

Accuplacer

  • A score of 60 or higher on the Elementary Algebra test or 100 or higher on the Arithmetic makes a student eligible for Math 100C*, 101, 102, 130, and 164**. A student may only take the Accuplacer test three times. The following web site will provide information and examples to help a student prepare: www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/accuplacer/accuplacer-tests.html.  Students who do not achieve a 60 or higher on the Accuplacer Elementary Algebra test or 100 or higher on the Arithmetic test will be required to take a developmental math course. You must contact the Math Center to determine the appropriate developmental math course to take. Passing Math 100B with a C or higher qualifies a student for Math 100C*, 101, 102, 130, and 164**.

 

*Math 100C, Intermediate Algebra, is a developmental course for students aiming for admission to Pre-Calculus, Math 153.

**Math 164 is offered only for Elementary Education majors with 45 credits or more.
