English GraduateThe English Department of Central Washington University offers the following two programs leading to the Master of Arts Degree. The goal of the faculty is to foster the awareness, understanding and skills necessary for effective teaching, further study, and personal fulfillment. LiteratureThe Standard program prepares students for doctoral work and research in the field, yet it also serves as a terminal degree for public school teachers. This conventional but flexible program provides advanced studies in British and American literature and language. (45 credits) Teaching English as a Second Language/Foreign LanguageThe TESL/TEFL program prepares students to work with adult language learners both in the United States and abroad. The program offers study in three general areas: language, pedagogy, and culture. Three requisites are desirable to begin the program: an introductory linguistics course, a course in methods and materials of teaching a foreign or second language, and high- intermediate proficiency in a foreign language. Students can be admitted without this background , but they will be required to gain this background while enrolled in the program. (55 credits) Graduate AssistantshipsA number of Graduate Assistantships are available to qualified applicants. The usual assignment of teaching English composition provides classroom experience that is especially valuable when applying for community college positions or for admission to a Ph.D. program. The assistantships pay $10,818 for the academic year 2000-01. Applications are available from the Graduate office, and should be included with the application for admission to the program or shortly thereafter. Academic year 2000-01. Assistantship applications are provided in the graduate application packet and should be submitted with the application for admission to the graduate program. No assistantship award can be made until an applicant has been formally accepted into a graduate program. Admissions ProceduresIf you would like to receive a graduate application packet, please fill out the online graduate application form. Admission RequirementsApplicants to the graduate program in English must submit with their applications 3 letters of recommendation and scores for the General Test of the Graduate Record Examination. Applicants must also submit a 5 to 10 page writing sample with the application for admission. The writing sample must include the applicant's name and address.
