How Students with Disabilities Get Assistance

Disability Support Services (DSS) at Central Washington University (CWU) was established to ensure that students with disabilities admitted to CWU are provided equal access to university programs and services. Appropriate accommodations are determined for each student on an individual basis by DSS professional staff and are based on disability documentation. Students with disabilities requesting services through DSS are required to provide documentation from a qualified professional verifying the existence of the disabling condition and describing the effect of the disability on the student's ability to access the educational process.
  • Once DSS has received adequate documentation of disability, the student must attend an "Intake Meeting". Intake meetings are held on the day prior to the first day of class each quarter and every week to two weeks (after schedule change period) throughout the academic year. Meetings held while classes in session are scheduled according to student/participant's class schedules. During this meeting the Associate Director will, 1) provide comprehensive information about Disability Support Services at CWU, 2) provide each student with a "new student packet" including written policies/procedures, 3) review each accommodation available to participating students, and, 4) provide information and advice regarding support available to all CWU students.
  • In order to be eligible to receive a specific accommodation, students must provide disability documentation which supports the need for that accommodation. The more specific your documentation is in describing the current affects of your disability on your functional limitations, especially as a college student, the easier it is for DSS to identify appropriate and reasonable accommodations.

Plan Ahead

  • It is important to remember that accommodations take time to implement, so planning ahead is essential.
  • Submit your documentation to DSS in plenty of time for it to be reviewed and an accommodation plan prepared early in the quarter that you wish to utilize academic accommodation.
  • Students attending classes on the Ellensburg campus must attend an Intake Meeting prior to implementing accommodations - sign up for a session at the beginning of the quarter so you can begin using accommodations right away!
  • Students who are enrolled in classes on one of CWU's Extension campuses can receive academic accommodations at those locations. Documentation of disability must be sent to Disability Support Services on the Ellensburg campus where where it is reviewed and an accommodation plan and Confirmation of Eligibility for Academic Adjustments are prepared. One copy of the Confirmation Form is mailed to the student and the original is forwarded to the specific Off-Campus Center Office. Students work with their faculty and Center staff to arrange for on-site accommodations.

Timeline for Receiving Services

Some accommodations require a substantial amount of preparation time. Once the student is found eligible to utilize an accommodation or service he/she is responsible for meeting prescribed deadline dates as indicated in DSS Policies and/or the DSS Academic Year Calendar. Students who submit their requests for accommodation on or before established deadline dates are ensured that they will receive those accommodations in a timely manner. Below are examples of accommodations and timelines for which students needs to plan.

Request for interpreter services:
Requests should be received by DSS 6-8 weeks in advance of the quarter start date.

Request for taped textbooks:
Requests should be received by DSS 6-8 weeks in advance of the quarter start date.

Request for materials in Braille:
Requests should be received by DSS 6-8 weeks in advance of the quarter start date.

Request for enlarged materials:
Requests should be received by DSS 6-8 weeks in advance of the quarter start date.

Students eligible for the accommodations listed above will have access to early registration so that they may meet DSS deadlines. To learn more about early registration, please review the information available in the Accommodations and Services section of this site.
