Ellensburg Film Festival
50 films, 35 screenings, 20 Countries!
October 4-7, 2007
Expanding its work to the Ellensburg community, the CWU Diversity
Education Center is proud to sponsor the second annual Ellensburg Film
Festival, Oct 4-7. A partnership between the University and Ellensburg
communities, the Ellensburg Film Festival features a remarkable line-up
of 50 films, 35 screenings, 5 venues (including the Student Union
Theatre & McConnell Auditorium), a video art installation at Gallery
One, presentations by visiting directors, and more...
Selected
for their cultural and artistic values, the EFF films provide
perspectives, narratives, and experiences often marginalized in
mainstream cinema. Such overly commercialized cinema has long turned
its lens away from the struggles and hopes of our communities and has
instead preoccupied itself with the spectacle, illusion, and cycle of
privilege. The Ellensburg Film Festival is an attempt to reclaim the
power and potential of cinema in our lives. We hope the Festival
furthers critical dialogue, generates original interpretations, and
provides international and multi-cultural perspectives to the University
and Ellensburg communities.
Some of the Festival highlights include the 2007 Sundance winner,
WAR/DANCE, a story of three internally-displaced boys in war-torn Uganda
who find hope in preparing for a national dance festival; THIS IS
ENGLAND, a deeply moving coming-of-age drama set in Thatcherite England;
GYPSY CARAVAN, a boisterous celebration of Romani culture through song
and dance; BEYOND BELIEF, a widely-acclaimed documentary about two 9/11
widows who travel to Afghanistan to discover an unlikely kinship with
widows halfway around the world; GHOSTS OF CITE SOLEIL, a provocative
look at the gangs of Haiti's violent slum, deemed by the UN as the
most dangerous place in the world.
The 2007 EFF films have thrilled audiences at some of the most
prestigious film festivals around the globe. Three EFF features come
from Sundance Film Festival including the EVERYTHING'S COOL, a
perceptive documentary about the politics of global warming. Two EFF
features were nominated for Academy Awards including, AFTER THE WEDDING,
a tale of Danish family struggling with the fragility of life and
forgiveness. Four of this year's critically-acclaimed films opened at
the Toronto International Film Festival, including SIERRA LEONE'S
REFUGE ALL STARS and MY BEST FRIEND. Three played in Telluride including
A CRUDE AWAKENING...
