News:Justin Sanders recieved the 2008 Raymond A. Smith Award for Achievement in Scholarship for his essay entitled "Can Ethics be Regarded as Knowledge?" at the College of Arts and Humanities Banquet.

News:Cassandra Lea, Christopher Mayer, and David Lambo received a Silver ADDY® Award in the 2008 Northwest ADDY® Awards Competition. They were awarded for their work titled "Imagination — Build Yours" a television commercial for Lego. The award they received was one of only 7 student awards and only 136 total awards given out, out of a pool of over 700 entrants.

News:Chris Mayer received two Gold Chinook Addy Awards at the 2008 ADDY Chinook Awards held in Yakima. The award was for his portfolio web site and a billboard campaign he did for Gatorade.

News:Graphic Design student, Tyler Johnson is the brains behind this years summer session theme 'Rock Your Summer. 'The University Rockers' started in July '07 and pitched the notion to the Office of Contiuning Ed as a way to get students to pay attention to the program's benefits. The band's single "Rock Your Summer" will be aired on KCWU 88.1 The 'Burg! Way to go Tyler!

Name:Madeleine Cartwright Department: Theatre Arts
News:“PS – I Love You,” a 10-minute play by Madeleine Cartwright, a senior theatre arts performance major, was chosen for presentation at the 2008 Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival for Region VII. In a field of nearly 70 scripts submitted to this year's contest, Maddie’s has been chosen as one of six to advance to the finals. The scripts were chosen by a panel of experts in Region II (mid-Atlantic region), who read the scripts "blind" (without any knowledge of the authors or schools who submitted). At this year's festival in Laramie, WY, award-winning student directors will cast and rehearse the plays, which will then be presented as staged readings. The winners of the regional 10-minute Play Contests are eligible to participate in a similar process at the National KCACTF Festival in Washington, DC in April.

News:Ian Stacy has won this year's Best Overall Paper prize from the Phi Alpha Theta Northwest regional conference for his paper entitled "Under an Atomic Sky: Origins of the Hanford Nuclear Reservation's Infamous Green Run." As a result of winning this award, Ian is now able to present this work at the AHA-PCB conference, to be held in August in Pasadena. So congratulations to Ian!

News:Rachael has recently been hired at Hanford High School, Richland, WA, for 2007-2008 to teach German and History. Congratulations Rachael. Rachael will also be defending her MA thesis "Dancing Cubanidad: Reconfiguring National Identity Through Fidel Castro's Cultural Project, 1959-73" on Thursday, July 20, 2007.

FACULTY MEMBERS
Name:Gary WeidenaarDepartment: Music
News:Gary Weidenaar was engaged by the Mrs. Washington pageant, held June 21, 2008 in Moses Lake, to provide music. The pageant wanted the National Anthem and the Battle Hymn of the Republic. Dr. Weidenaar created an arrangement of the National Anthem for the pageant. Weidenaar also oversaw the hiring of a 32 piece orchestra of CWU students which recorded the Peter Wilhousky arrangement of the Battle Hymn under his direction, and hired a 12 voice choir comprised of selected CWU Chamber Choir members to sing live.

News:Gary Weidenaar served as a rating judge for the traditional choir day at the Columbia Basin College Festival in the Tri-Cities.
Name:Demaris GarceauDepartment: English
News:Demaris Garceau finished her Master of Science in Resource Management in 2007. Since fall of 1995, she has been teaching writing and literture courses at Oregon State University, and the History of Science and Technology at Linn Benton Community College. At OSU, Demaris has taught Media Writing 201, Business Writing 214, Style in Composition 323, and Technical Writing 327. She also taught a course in Latin American and Caribbean Literature. Lately, she mostly teaches the Technical Writing courses, which she enjoys as she works with students in engineering, the sciences, education, and arts and humanities. She is still working on a novella and developing her prose poems. This year, she participated in creating a collaborative sculpture for Da Vinci Days in Corvallis, Oregon, and is planning to work on another collaborative kinetic sculpture for next year's Da Vinci Days. (Check out Da Vinci Days on the web--very cool!)

News:Mark Lane just began his two year term as President of the Washington Music Education Association. During his term he will represent Washington State at the National Assembly and will be involved in National policy decisions involving music education in addition to leading the State Association.

News:Dr. Bartlett has been accepted into the 2008 APA/AAPT Graduate Teaching Seminar, August 7th-10th, at the University of Guelph, Ontario. The seminar, which is for current or recent graduate students, and is run by the American Philosophical Association and the American Association of Philosophy Teachers, is limited to 20 participants.

News:Vijay Singh adjudicated over 30 high school choirs in the Boise area April 15-16, 2008. Other adjudications this quarter included the Puyallup school district high school division and Wenatchee district high school divisions. Singh also performed the bass solos in CWU's production of the Beethoven 9th Symphony May 18th, 2008 as part of the Presidential Concert Series.

News:Chenyang Li, Philosophy and Religious Studies, published a paper "The Ideal of Harmony in Ancient Chinese and Greek Philosophy" in the journal Tao: A Journal of Comparative Philosophy, VII.1 (March 2008). In the same issue he also published a book review of Daniel Bell's Beyond Liberal Democracy: Political Thinking for an East Asia in Context (a CHOICE 2007 Best Academic Title).

News:Heidi Szpek's paper “He Walked Upon a Wooden Leg: Epitaphs and Acrostic Poems on Jewish Tombstones”, presented at the Legacy of the Holocaust Conference 2007 at the Jagiellionian University, Krakow, Poland (May 24-26, 2007), has been accepted for publication by the Jagiellionian University Press in the peer reviewed conference proceedings.

News:Dr. Bret Smith recently attended the Music Educators National Conference Biennial Inservice Conference in Milwaukee WI, where he served as member of the Music Educators Journal editorial committee and chaired meetings and panel discussions for the Special Research Interest Group on Asseesment. Dr. Smith recently presented at the Washington Music Educators Association annual conference. He has been invited to contribute a chapter on motivation in music to the upcoming MENC Handbook of Music Learning published by Oxford University Press. He is also one of the organizers of SynergiaNW, a benefit concert bringing classical and contemporary artists from the Northwest together to benefit youth music causes, to occur in spring of 2010.

News:Gary Weidenaar served as adjudicator/clinician for the Eastern Washington Music Educator's Association (EWMEA) large group festival held at Spokane Falls Community College March 24-27, 2008. Working with a team of three other adjudicators, Weidenaar provided taped comments and ratings for 43 choirs during the four-day festival, while providing clinics for 25 of the choirs. About half of the clinics were 15 minute sessions on stage. The other half of the clinics were 25 minute sessions in a rehearsal room, and included strategies for sight reading as well as working on the performed pieces.

News:Gary Weidenaar served as a guest clinician for two Boise, Idaho high schools on Mon. & Tues., March 17 & 18, 2008. On Monday, Weidenaar worked with 4 choirs at Centennial High School, and was guest clinician for their pre-festival concert in the evening. On Tuesday, he worked with three choirs at Eagle High School.

News:Gary Weidenaar served as an adjudicator for the Columbia Basin Music Educators Association (CBMEA) large group festival held at Kamiakin High School in the Tri-Cities on March 20, 2008. The one-day festival included 19 choirs. Weidenaar rated and provided taped comments to all 19 choirs, and gave separate half-hour clinics to seven of the choirs.

News:David Barnett recently attended two sound conferences in Dallas, Texas. The first was called "Sound Reinforcement for Operators," where Barnett learned to operate, adjust and troubleshoot sound systems in order to achieve the best sound quality possible. The second conference, "Sound Reinforcement for Technicians," focused on the assembly and installation of sound systems based on venue space and production requirements.

News:This years recipient of the CAH Staff Recognition Award, Leslee Caul, has established a thriving marketing department to support the Theatre Arts' degree programs and the productions of Central Theatre Ensemble, and launched a national ad campaign and marketing plan in 2005 that is causing quite a buzz both regionally and nationally. Caul was presented the award at a gathering of the college faculty and staff, hosted by CAH Dean Dr. Marji Morgan. Caul is a 1994 graduate of CWU's Department of English and has worked in the Department of Theatre Arts for 11 years.

News:Christopher was recently appointed to the position of Facilities Manager for Annex Theatre, Seattle's longest-operating "fringe theatre" company, now completing its 21st season of production. In addition, Mr. Comte has recently completed his fifth season as Site Coordinator for the Kevin Hadley Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program for Performing Artists, and later this summer will celebrate his third anniversary as Membership Director for the Seattle Local of the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA), the national union for professional broadcasters, recording artists, and television, radio, and new media performers.
