Admission Audition Requirements
For New Trumpet Students

In order to complete your acceptance into the CWU Department of Music program, you must audition for the music faculty. This gives us an opportunity to hear the level you have achieved in your musical skills and it gives you the opportunity to discuss your development with collegiate instructors.

For your audition we recommend the following:

  1. Select music which best displays your performance level.
  2. We strongly recommend you prepare your audition material under the supervision of your private teacher and/or music director.

Requirements:

  1. Arbans: Characteristic Studies  #1, first 7 lines down to the key change, pg. 285
  2. Chromatic scale from low F# to high C.  Higher if possible.
  3. Melodic Solo selection of your choice.
For example Haydn Trumpet Concerto 2nd movement, or a similar work showing melodic playing capabilities.

Admission audition times must be arranged directly with Professor Harbaugh, head of the trumpet area. He can be reached by calling the Dept. of Music at 509-963-1216. Auditions should be scheduled during our annual Open House, in April. For accommodation at another time, please contact Professor Harbaugh.

Jazz Improvisation auditions require two charts in contrasting styles (Blues in F or Bb, a jazz standard from the "realbook", etc). A taped accompaniment or Aebersold play along disc is acceptable and encouraged for a Jazz Improvisation audition.

Large Ensemble Audition Requirements
For New and Returning Trumpet Students

Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, and Symphonic Band auditions will take place during the first week of each new quarter. You will sign up for an audition time on Professor Gookin’s door, room 109. Professor Harbaugh will post audition excerpts on his bulletin board the first week of classes each quarter.

Jazz Band auditions will take place during the first week of each new quarter. Visit the Jazz Auditions page for more information, charts, and scheduled times. Contact Professor Bruya if you have any further questions.
