Portrait of Dr. Gries

Dr. Peter Gries

Department Chair

Welcome to the web site of the Music Department at Central Washington University!  We have much to be proud of: our facilities are unparalleled in the region (take the tour on the web site!), we strive to maintain a nurturing, welcoming community of musicians while holding to the highest standards, our ensembles are remarkable for their excellence in all genres, and I consider myself extremely fortunate to be associated with such an extraordinary faculty of dedicated music educators and performers.  We have one of the largest undergraduate programs in the region, with about 280 majors and a graduate program of about 15 Master’s candidates. This size enables us to offer performance opportunities in a wide variety of performance areas: a Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, Chamber Choir, University Choir and a host of smaller ensembles, including three Jazz Bands, three Jazz Choirs, Men’s and Women’s choirs, Jazz Combos, and choirs for Brass, Flute, Trumpet, Trombone and Tuba/Euphonium.  Though primarily comprised of music majors, all ensembles are open to any student in the university.  We also sponsor a Preparatory String program, in which string majors can get experience and employment by becoming involved as coaches, conductors and directors.

We offer the Bachelor of Arts degree in Music and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music with a specialization in Jazz.  Explore the Jazz area of the web site for detailed information about this new program.  We also offer Bachelor of Music degrees in Music Education, Composition and Performance (in keyboard, voice, guitar and all orchestra and band instruments.  Consult our degrees page for information about the requirements and curricula of these degrees, as well as others.

Our graduate program offers the Master of Music degree with specializations in Composition, Performance, Performance-Pedagogy, Conducting and Music Education. Details about these programs can be viewed in the Graduate Handbook.

Our faculty is remarkable, for their reputations and accomplishments; browse through the Faculty Directory and see for yourselves. This year we welcome two new faculty members to our community: Dr. Elaine Ross will be teaching music theory and directing our composition program, Dr. Gayla Blaisdell will be teaching voice and directing our opera program.

Any inquiries about our program are most welcome; direct them to me at:
