Orchestras
Orchestral music flourishes at CWU. CWU Orchestras places a premium on individual musicianship and high standards of musicality. With two ensembles available quarterly, the groups are dedicated to performing symphonic repertoire from the baroque through the twentieth century, as well as contemporary works of our time. All members are chosen through audition in the fall of each academic year.
The Symphony Orchestra, CWU's premier large ensemble, is comprised of around 80 musicians. The orchestra performs 5 to 8 concerts annually. Recent events of significance include performances of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony and Vaughan Williams’ Serenade to Music accompanied by the University Chorale and Chamber Choir. In 2003, the ensemble performed George Crumb’s “Star-Child” at Benaroya Hall in Seattle, WA. Last year, the orchestra was invited to perform Respighi’s “Pines of Rome” at the All-State Conference in Yakima, WA. |
The Chamber Orchestra aims to perform works designed for more intimate instrumentations. The ensemble performs for a variety of programs that include string and mixed ensembles. Recent repertoire has included Schoenberg’s arrangement of “L’apres-midi d’un faune”, Shostakovich’s “Chamber Symphony”, and Milhaud’s “La Creation du Monde”. The Chamber Orchestra also serves as the Opera Orchestra performing full-staged productions. |
