WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A "VOCAL INTERVIEW" AND AN AUDITION?
You may choose to simply do a vocal interview - designed for those people who just want to let the Choral Faculty help place you in the choir best suited to your ability and experience. It is a 7 minute slot, during which we'll get to know you, gather some information and hear you sing a couple of simple exercises.

You may, but do not have to do vocal interview if you're thinking of joining either the University Chorale or the Men's Choir.  You simply come to the first meeting.+

An audition is called for if you are interested in either Women's Chorale or Chamber Choir. Auditions are more rigorous, usually lasting 10-15 minutes, and include tonal memory, a prepared selection, a chosen selection, and sight reading.

WHEN ARE AUDITIONS AND VOCAL INTERVIEWS?
Sign up sheets will be posted on the bulletin board outside Office 209 in the Music Building on and after Thursday, Sept. 18, 2008.

Vocal Interviews , in 7 minute time slots, will take place at the following times: Monday, Sept. 22 from 3-5pm and Tues., Sept. 23 from 1-3pm or by appointment. PLEASE ARRIVE 10-15 minutes before your scheduled time to fill out the necessary and important paperwork. It will greatly help if you know your student number, phone and address, and email address.

Depending upon your background and experience and interest, some of you will asked to audition for women's or chamber choir.

HOW DO I SIGN UP
Either sign up on or after September 18 for a 7 minute vocal interview slot (see above). It is fine to sign up when you get to campus. If you are interested in auditioning for women's or chamber choir, you may e-mail the instructor for a time:  Gary.Weidenaar@cwu.edu for chamber choir, and Vijay.Singh@cwu.edu for women's choir.

MUST I BE A MUSIC MAJOR?
Absolutely not! In fact, in some groups there are more non-majors than majors. If you like to sing, there's a CWU Choir for you!

WHO MUST AUDITION?
If you are new to campus, you encouraged to complete a "Vocal Interview" - during it, you will be advised about whether the Men's Choir, University Chorale, or other ensembles are the most appropriate, given your schedule, experience, course load, class conflicts, etc.
If you wish to be considered for Women's Chorale or Chamber Choir, a full audition is required to enter either of these groups. Professors Singh and Weidenaar will audition people privately in their offices.

WHAT DO VOCAL INTERVIEWS AND AUDITIONS CONSIST OF?
They are relaxed, friendly, and nothing to be uneasy about. Between 1 and 4 members of the Choral Team will guide you through it. These give us a chance to get to know you individually before the semester gets underway.

Vocal Interviews include:

  • Singing. You may be asked to sing the first verse of My Country 'Tis of Thee (we have copies of it for you if needed).
  • Vocalizing. You will vocalize through your range
  • Pitch Retention. You will sing back series of pitches after they are played for you on the piano.

Auditions include:

  • Singing. Plan to sing 60-90 seconds of an aria or art song - unaccompanied.
  • Vocalizing. You will vocalize through your range.
  • Pitch Retention. You will sing back series of pitches after they are played for you on the piano.
  • Sight reading. Rhythm Skills, pitch skills, and interval knowledge will be tested.

WHAT DO I HAVE TO PREPARE?
You really don't have to prepare anything in advance for a Vocal Interview.

WHAT INFORMATION DO I NEED TO HAVE WITH ME?
Nothing in particular just make sure you arrive 10-15 minutes before your scheduled time to fill out the necessary and important paperwork. It will greatly help if you know your student number, phone and address, and email address. Women's Chorale and female Chamber Choir hopefuls will also try on and get sized for the required outfit.

DESCRIPTION OF CHOIRS
Visit our Choral Ensembles page to find a brief description of Central's Choral groups.

I'VE ALREADY ENROLLED FOR A CHOIR OR I HAVEN'T YET ENROLLED YET
If you've already enrolled in a choir, please let us know that at the vocal interview. It is very common for singers to go through drops and adds to change the ensemble in which they have been enrolled. If you feel you only have one or two time slots free, let us know that - in many cases, there are options of which you may not be aware. We try and balance voices and voice parts as well as your wishes as best we can.

There is no need to physically sign up for a choir before its first rehearsal. You are given a reasonable amount of time by the registrar's office to drop and add with no penalty . After the designated add/drop date a $75.00 fee is assessed.

If you haven't signed up for a choir yet, you may do so within the first week of the quarter.

If you have signed up, you may drop one choir and replace it with another (if needed) - see your instructor for how.

THERE ARE TWO COURSE & LINE NUMBERS WHICH ONE DO I LIST?
Although there are at least two line numbers for each choir, it is the same ensemble. The lower course number (in the 200's) is for freshman and sophomores, the upper number (in the 400's) generally for juniors or seniors. In the case of certain choirs, the upper line number (in the 500's) is a number for graduate students.

WHEN WILL RESULTS BE POSTED?
Results of auditions will be posted by noon on Wednesday, September 24 on the choral bulletin board near the choir room as well as on Prof. Singh and Weidenaar  doors.
