Dedicated to Don and Peggy Schaake in recognition of their philanthropy, the rotunda is the gateway to both the Recital and Concert hall venues.
In the Rotunda, there is kind of an opposing shape, a curved line that divides the glass from clear vision glass to the fritted glass above. It provides the differential experience of sun shining in the nonfritted areas and creates patterns on the floors and the walls of the lobby space. ![]() CWU Recital Hall Size: 34 x 80 Special Features ![]() ![]() ![]() CWU Northeast Entrance The main entrance to the CWU Music Building is found on the Northeast side. The drum-shaped, glass-enclosed lobby connects the two wings of the building - the performance spaces and rehearsal spaces from the classrooms, practice rooms and faculty studios. Architects wanted it to serve as "a beacon at night for the performances." The rotunda main entrance is a drum, soaring as high as 46 feet and as low as 29 feet. The glass is fritted in a circular fashion above eye-level. The fritted and non-fritted glass creates movement within the lobby. The path of the sun casts shadows onto different parts of the building throughout the day.
![]() CWU South Entrance The entrance to the CWU Music Building from the South parking lots is the portal for access to and from the CWU campus. The use of metal panels and sloped rooflines on the exterior of the 70,000-square-foot building are a departure from the facades that exist on the Ellensburg, Wash., campus. Architects at Studio Meng Strazzara, the Seattle-based firm responsible for the exterior skin, opted to incorporate an extensive amount of glass and metal panels. But they also worked with brick to keep some connection to the campus's historic architectural style

Melody is not just symbolic within the interior; the landscape surrounding the building is intended to convey composition. "Even the concrete is scored, like the musical staff. We have five score lines going through from one side of the building to the other side of the building [on the ground], like the dark brick exterior relief," elaborated Lee. "Also, on the site lighting, we located the light so it looks like musical notes outside on those reveals in the concrete."
CWU Music Classrooms Our 6 large classroom areas provide everything our students need for their music education. All classrooms feature an integrated A/V system with video projection possible from a variety of sources. One of our classrooms is dedicated as a piano lab and offers students the latest in music software as well.
CWU Music Jazz Room Our Jazz room is home to CWU's nationally renowned Jazz Band I as well as our other instrumental and vocal jazz groups. Though the acoustics are adjustable, we normal keep this room on the "dry" side for jazz rehearsals. Included is an integrated sound system as well as a portable Allen & Heath GL3300 32 input console and Yamaha floor monitors for the vocal jazz ensembles.
CWU Music Student Lounge Our student lounge provides students with a place to hang out between classes or any time they need a place to relax or study. Common kitchen amenities are provided to allow students a place to get some nourishment during those seemingly endless practice and study times.
CWU Music Practice Rooms Our music education building features over 30 dedicated practice rooms and more than 65 pianos. Students have access to these practice spaces nearly any hour of the day. With thick walls, students need not worry about disturbing their neighbors. Unlike many facilities almost every one of our CWU practice rooms include a window to the outside world making practice just a little more pleasurable.
