Online Research Resources

The Music Index

A compilation of articles in over 700 music periodicals. This does not contain text of articles but gives all bibliographic information. The Music Index began in 1949 but the online version starts in 1979 so you must still browse through the earlier paper volumes to complete your research. If you find an article your library does not subscribe to you can do an interlibrary loan request.

RILM Abstracts

Another periodical index, including over 350 journals, many foreign language ones, as well as listings of new books and theses/dissertations. Each entry has an abstract in English given a short description of the entry.

OCLC First Search

A listing of the holdings of nearly every college library as well as many public libraries in the US (and some Canadian). A great place to search for books on your topic that are not in your school's library. If you find an item that your library does not subscribe to you can do an interlibrary loan request.

Oxford Music Online

Full text to The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians (2001), The New Grove Dictionary of Opera (1992), and The New Grove Dictionary of Jazz (2002). Also full text for Oxford Companion to Music (2002), Oxford Dictionary of Music (2006), and Encyclopedia of Popular Music (2006). CWU subscribes to all but the popular music dictionary. All are regularly updated online.

Digital Dissertations

A listing of most doctoral research papers written within the US. Dissertations are usually very in depth on a specific subject and have extensive bibliographies of sources. More recent dissertations have a few pages of actual text for you to browse. Dissertations can be obtained through interlibrary loan of may be purchased through University Microfilms which is linked through this site.

JSTOR

Full text of 53 music periodicals and other disciplines, not current issues, but goes back to around 1900 through the early 21st century.

Academic Search Premeir

Full text of several current periodicals.

Oxford Reference
