You should carry along enough water for you to last the whole time you are going if on a hike but if there is something that is unexpected happens, there are many ways of finding water.
If you are near a river or lake you can purify the water with tablets or a purifier, but if not try and avoid completely still water. Only drink the water if absolutely necessary and you cannot find other sources of water. One way to purify the water is to boil it for five to ten minutes. This will kill any bacteria that is built up in it.
Drink the water supply that you have when you are thirsty. Do not try and ration out the water. It is a necessity. You can get water off of leaves from morning dew, in stumps sometimes or after storms from puddles that build up.
