Lesson 3

Topic: How to start a fire

Concept: How to be safe while building a fire.

Skill: Read and build a fire from scratch.

Objectives: Students will learn how to make a small but safe fire to keep warm and what is needed to make one.

Lesson Activity: (materials needed: wood, small kindling, matches, fire pit)

Students will be grouped up into groups of four and will each be given an area to start a fire in. There are different ways to start fires. The students will have the choice on which design they would like to try and I will give them a type of lighting mechanism to try to start the fire with whether it is a match or flint and steel. Each group will get a situation where they are missing something so that they have to figure out how to light the fire with what they already have. Then the students will come back together and discuss what different ways worked best and how they solved the problem.
