Lesson activities:

This activity is one that puts all the skills together in a planned situation. The students will be put out in the woods in an area that was ok by the rangers to work in and the students will have to build a shelter, find water and the resources to build a fire. They will not build a fire at this site but will end up bringing it back to camp for the campfire due to safety reasons. We do not want to burn down the forest. The students will be left out in the wilderness in groups of three or four for about five hours. Long enough so that they can build a shelter and feel what it is like to be out in the wilderness by themselves. Then they will be brought in where they will boil the water that they found. Here they will build one fire for everyone and campout for the night. The next day they will practice their orienteering skills by following a course that is set up for them. The students will also go on a hike to see what it is like out in the untouched areas of this world. At the end of the trip the student will have to write a reflection paper on what the students had done and how they felt being out in the wilderness. They will be given a questionnaire to fill out how they felt out there and if they would want to be a prepared or unprepared lost person.
