Pass Drills
1. Pass-Off Toss
Equipment: one ball, two players.
Description: One player assumes a ready position (receiver), while
the other(thrower) throws a ball at a constant velocity and
ball placement. The receiver object is to get a feel of the ball
and return it within one step of the thrower. After a certain number
of times they alternate.
2. Pass-Off Toss II
Equipment: one ball, to players
Description: One player assumes a ready position (receiver), while
other (thrower) throws the ball at different velocities
overhand or underhand. The receiver must adjust and make a good
pass within one step of thrower. Alternate
3. Pass-Off Toss III
Equipment: one ball, two players
Description: One player assumes a ready position (receiver), while
the other (thrower) throws a ball at varied speeds with
different ball placement (left or right). The receiver must adjust
and make a good pass within one step of thrower. Alternate
4. Pass-Off Toss IV
Equipment: one ball, two players
Description: Similar to III except this time they throw it forward
or behind the receiver.
5. Pass to Target With Tosser.
Equipment: three or four people with one or two balls
Description: The tosser is on one side of net and the passer
and target are on the other. The tosser, tosses the ball over the
net
the passer, passes it the best they can to the target person which
will be near the center of the net.
6. Touch net backpedal- serve reception
Equipment: two or three people with one ball
Description: The receiver and tosser are on separate sides and
the receiver has their hands on the net. The tosser then throws
the ball from the far end of the other court and the receiver must
back pedal to the ball and make a pass to the target. An extra
person can be the receiver and they must communicate and make a good
pass.
Serve Drills
7. Underhand Serve and Catch:
Equipment: one ball for two people.
Directions: Each person is on either side of the court and they serve
to each other while the other catches it.
8. Underhand Serve to Target:
Equipment: One ball for two people, and three hula hoops.
Directions: Each person is on either side of the court and they serve
to each other courts aiming for a hula hoop that is placed
short, deep down line, and across court. This can be a game by
coring a point for a hula hoop hit and it can be changed by
moving the hula hoops around the court.
9. Overhand Serve and Catch:
Equipment: One ball for two people.
Directions: Each person is on a side of the volleyball court and they
catch and serve to each other.
10. Overhand Serve to Target:
Equipment: One ball for two people and three hula hoops.
Directions: The server aims for the three hula hoops which are placed
short, deep down line or across court. This can be a
game to see who can hit the most, or the hoops can be moved.
11. Jump Serve:
Equipment: One ball for two people or the class can line up across
the court and hit to each other.
Directions: Spread out on either side of the court and jump serve to
the other side.
Set Drills
12. Lie Down Catch and Throw:
Equipment: One ball and two people
Directions: One person lies down on the ground and their partner drop
the ball over their forehead they catch and throw back
up, repeat and switch.
13. Toss and Set:
Equipment: One ball two people.
Directions: Your partner tosses you the ball at head level and you
set the ball back.
14. Freeze Check and Correct
Equipment: The object is to toss the ball to your partner and they
freeze after each catch and throw. The tosser pinpoints where
you need help. Check points are: balance, hand position, ten
fingers touching ball, ball not touching palm
15. Back Sets Catch and Throw:
Equipment: One ball for three people.
Directions: One person tosses, the other back sets, while the third
catches. Do 5 times then rotate.
16. Jog and Set:
Equipment: Two people and one ball
Directions: Both people are in the back row and one tosses the
ball nice and high while the other person jogs under it and sets
it back to the person who comes up to the front row who catches it.
17. Jump Set and Catch:
Equipment: One ball and two people.
Directions: One person tosses while the other attempts a jump
set back.
Attack Drills
18. The Approach:
Equipment: The net only.
Directions: Both the two set and three set approach are done using
the arms by swinging at an imaginary ball.
19. Hit Stationary Ball:
Equipment: One person with a ball near a wall.
Directions: Holding the ball about head level hit the ball with your
fleshy part of your hand snapping your wrist. The ball should
then contact the floor then the wall then back to you. After
it hits the wall it can then be hit immediately or caught.
20. The Approach and Hit Stationary Ball:
Equipment: A person with a ball at each net on a chair.
Directions: The person on the chair holds the ball about 1-2 feet above
the net. Students then hit the ball practicing the
approach snapping their wrist and making good contact.
21. Quick Hit: (1)
Equipment: A setter or tosser with a ball near the net, and a
hitter.
Directions: A line is formed facing the net with a tosser, tossing
the ball about a foot over the net. The hitter then approaches
the ball and makes a quick hit.
22. Medium Hit: (2)
Equipment: A setter or tosser with a ball near the net, and a hitter.
Directions: A line is formed facing the net with a tosser, who tosses
the ball 3-4 feet above the net. The hitter approaches the
ball and times the hit.
23. High Hit: (3)
Equipment: A setter or tosser with a ball near the net, and a hitter.
Directions: A line is formed facing the net with a tosser, who tosses
the ball 4 feet or higher above the net. The hitter then
approaches then times the hit.
24. Slide Hit:
Equipment: A setter or tosser with a ball near the net, and a hitter.
Directions: A line is formed facing the net with a tosser, who tosses
the ball front or back at the middle level. The hitter must
approach directly at setter then slide the direction the ball is going
and time the hit.
25. Back Peddle then Attack:
Equipment: A setter or tosser with a ball near the net, and a hitter.
Directions: A hitter starts with hands on net, back peddles about four
steps then approaches the net where the setter tosses the
ball for a hit.
26. Tip drill:
Equipment: A setter or tosser with a ball near the net, and a hitter.
Directions: A hitter approaches the net with the tosser tossing
the ball. This time the hitter hits with a knuckle or the bottom
of
their palm attempting to hit over a blocker.
Blocking Drill
27. Block:
Equipment: Three people and one ball with a net.
Directions: One person is on one side of the net and two on the other.
The blocker attempts to follow were the hitter goes by
reading then reacts by jumping, arms up, thumbs together, with a slight
lean to inside of court.
28. Slide and block:
Equipment: Three people and one ball with a net.
Directions: It is the same except there are two blockers. One
slide down the court to help.
Other Drills
29. Boo-Boo
Equipment: three teams to a court, with three people on each
one.
Directions: The object is too not let the ball fall on your side
of the court, if it does you leave the court and the next team jumps
on. The ball is started by tossing or serving, and is a quick
moving drill.
30. 2 man Pepper:
Equipment: Two people one ball
Directions: Partners stand about ten feet apart and practice
setting, passing, and hitting with accuracy to each other.
31. 3 Man Pepper:
Equipment: One ball and three people.
Directions: It is the same except they rotate from hitting to
setting to passing in line.
32. Combo drills:
Equipment: number of people and balls vary
Directions: Whether its 2 skill combinations or 6 skill combinations,
all that you have to do is put drills together. Ex: Tosser,
setter, hitter, blocker is a three skill combo, or blocking, digging,
setting and hitting is a four skill drill and requires 3 people on
one side of the court and a setter and hitter on the other.
