Definition of Skills and Teaching Cues
Passing
This is done with the ball contacting the forearm under control, and
balances with the hands either in the scoop position, fingers interlaced
or the fist inserted.
Teaching keys: Wrists together

Serve:
Underhand: This is done by holding the ball in your left hand with
palm up over your left leg which is slightly in front. You contact
the ball with the meat part of your right hand toward the target.
Overhead: With the left lead forward the left hand holds the
ball out in front with palm up at shoulder level. The right elbow
is behind your head and drawn back, the left hand then tosses the ball
up and your right hand smacks the ball with the meaty part.
Overhead Pass or Set:
The set is done by receiving the ball above head level, with
the hands in a bowl shape. The receiver then gives with the ball
and pushes it in the desired direction.

Attack or Spike:
The spike is done by running, jumping and hitting the ball near the
net. It is executed by hitting the ball above the net
downward into the opponents court. The jump requires both feet
together with the jump vertical and the palm of the hand strikes the ball.
Teaching keys: Run-accelerate to the jump

Hit- contact the ball
at a point high and in front of you
Blocking:
Blocking is done by watching the attacker and attempting to block
his/her spike by reaching over the net. The blocker should leave
the floor slightly after the attacker, extend their arms and spread their
fingers.
