1. Ball Drop
| Explanation of drill | Extension | Refinement |
| Place one hand on top of ball, spread fingers apart, and grip ball with fingertips. Drop the ball and try to catch it with your fingertips before it hits the ground. | Increase the repetitions by increments of 5. Catch 20 of 25 before ball hits floor. | Don't drop the ball but grip it with max strength for 5 seconds, alternate hands. |
2. Hand tug of war
| Explanation of drill | Extension | Refinement |
| The ball is like the rope in tug of war contest. Face your partner, and with the ball in the middle, each of you grasps the ball with the fingertips of one hand. When both of you are satisfied with your grip, one of you signals "go." The winner is the person who pulls the ball away from the other without losing their grip on the ball. Play 10 times on each hand. | Increase the number of times you play with 15. | Decrease the number of times you play with 5. |
3. Wall passing
| Explanation of drill | Extension | Refinement |
| Practice the overhand pass technique by taping a target square and at shoulder height on wall. Position yourself 4-6 meters from the wall, as if facing a teammate and pass to the target. Allow the rebound to bounce, catch it with both hands, assure ready position and throw to the target again. Different types of passes can be used on this drill. | 1. Increase the passing distance.
2. Reduce the target size 3. Stand closer to the wall but don't let it bounce. |
Eliminate the wall target. |
4. Partner passing
| Explanation of drill | Extension | Refinement |
| To practice the combined skills of overhead passing and catching, stand 4 meters from your partner. Form a two handed target in front of your throwing hand shoulder. Pass to each other using the overhead pass. Your partner should not have to move hands from the shoulder are to catch the ball. | 1. Stand farther away from each other.
2. Facing your partner stand 4-5 meters away from another pair of partners. each pair has a ball. Your partner passes you the ball while you and a member of the other pair move around each other in a figure "8" path. |
1. Move closer.
2. Use different ball |
5. Running Partner Passing
| Explanation of drill | Extension | Refinement |
| Start with your partner on the goal line about 5 meters apart. Pass overhand to each other while running down the court. When you receive the ball, take three steps and pass back to your partner. Show to hands for a target and catch with to hands. Use lead passes for partners speed and forward movement. | 1. Increase the distance between partners
2. Use fakes when running 3. Use defenders |
Start the drill by walking, and steadily increase speed. |
Piston drill
| Explanation of drill | Extension | Refinement |
| This drill simulates the game like movements of the three back court players. Work with six people on this drill or 3 on 3. They form two horizontal lines about 6 meters apart and 3 between each player in the line. Imagine that you are a back court offensive attacking the and pass laterally to a partner, and imagine the guy in front of you is the goalie. Attack toward the player then pass laterally and back to starting position. Always keep moving, move the ball in both directions. | 1. Use two balls. Start each ball at opposing ends of each line.
2. Continue two ball drill for 30 seconds without error, increase to 60. 3. Add up to six players and 4 balls. |
Overhand pass instead of wrist passing. |
Dribble Freeze tag
| Explanation of drill | Extension | Refinement |
| The object is to dribble the ball and tag as many players without leaving the designated area. After they are tagged the must freeze. This help with keeping head up and getting better control. | 1. All players take a ball and dribble around designated area. The object here is to knock other players ball away. | Have players start by walking then after thirty seconds go to running.
Use bigger ball |
Set Shot Target Practice
| Explanation of drill | Extension | Refinement |
| With a target on the wall similar to official goal take shots at certain parts of goal. Aiming for upper corners and sides of goal. Start a 9 meters or 12. | 1. Shoot from 10 or 15.
2. Aim for 3 consecutive shoots at a corner. 3. Same drill but do jump shot |
1. Make the corner targets bigger.
2. Shot from 7 meters. |
Wing Shot
| Explanation of drill | Extension | Refinement |
| This is good for getting familiar with the floor space with a wing shot. Start on the left wing if you are right handed and take three dribbles to the right and jump shoot at the goal. | 1. Add a goalie
2. Add a pass from a teammate 3. Add pass and goalie 4. Add a teammate, goalie, and 1 defender |
1. Progress from more in the middle to more to the wing |
Fall Shot learning progression
Using appropriate mat cushioning, teach forward, backward, and shoulder
rolls. This drill will help you learn the fall shot safely.
On a padded mat or carpet position yourself across from your partner.
Start about three meter apart and use the following progression.
Do not advance to the next progression until you have successfully completed
the previous one.
a. In a push up position, bend your arms to push your body off the ground.
Then land on your knees again, cushioning the force of the fall by bending
your elbows.
b. Kneel on both knees (you may want to use knee pads). Bring
the ball to shooting position. Fall forward and pass to your partner.
Cushion fall by bending elbows.
c. Stand with feet shoulder width apart. Bend at knees and bring
ball to shooting position. Fall forward and pass to your partner.
Cushion as in a.
d. Start with your back to your partner. Pivot, fall forward, and pass
to your partner, cushion as in a.
e. Repeat the same progression on the 6 meter line in front of the
goal. This time shoot at goal falling onto mat, remember to roll
or bend at elbows. Later remove the mat and repeat. Remember you
cant contact floor before shooting.
f. Eventually add goalie.
Half court 3 on 2
| Explanation of drill | Extension | Refinement |
| This drill is good for choosing the right drill for the right situation. There are 3 offensive players and two defensive player and 1 goalie. The offense must make 3 passes before shooting and only 1 side of the handball court, meaning the court is split in half down the center the long way. The defense score 2 for interceptions, missed shots, or goalie stops. Rotate positions after 5 or ten points. | 1. Decrease the width of playing area
2. Play 3 on 3 make it take it. first to ten |
1. Take away goalie |
Partner blocking
| Explanation of drill | Extension | Refinement |
| This drill is to gradually reduce fear of blocking shots. Partners stand about 10 feet from each other, one defender other thrower. The thrower tosses the ball about half speed around defender. The defender attempts to stop them. This should be done with a wall or net behind the defender. Gradually increase speed when defender is ready. | 1. Increase speed
2. Shot different shots 3. Thrower runs before tossing. |
1. Players move closer apart but thrower doesn't throw ball. |
One on one drill
| Explanation of drill | Extension | Refinement |
| Good drill for game like situations. With a defender in front of goal the offensive player dribbles or fakes and shoots on empty goal. Boundaries are set to keep better control and practice. Switch after 5 attempts. | 1. Increase the number of attacks
2. Put a goalie in net |
1. Decrease the size of the boundaries for defender, increase size for offense. |
Goalie beginning training progression
This progression allows goalies to concentrate on technique and not
worry about getting hurt with hard throw. Start by having partner
throw ball gently. Start bout 3 meters apart.
a. Partner throws a ball half speed at your face. Block the ball with
both hands don not catch it.
b. Partner throws five times to your right high to your right and 5
high to your left. Block ball with both hands.
c. Partner rolls five balls to your right and 5 to your left.
Block the ball by turning your foot out and covering with your hands.
d. Partner rolls ball between your legs. Stand upright, block ball
by jumping slightly forward and at the same time, bringing your feet together.
Ball is blocked by hitting the front of your ankles.
e. Partner throws a low bouncing shot to the right and to the left.
Block the ball by using the shot and cover technique,
f. Partner throws the ball anywhere in the goal. Choose the correct
technique to block the ball.
Line shooting
| Explanation of drill | Extension | Refinement |
| The drill you repetitive practice at blocking high and low shots. By moving from one side to the other, this drill also helps you develop a feel for the size of the goal opening. Six shooters stand in one line in from of the goal. Each player has a ball and shoots on after another, alternating right high to left high. The next time around they shoot left low, right low. Let the goalie recover to ready stance before next shot. | 1. Players alternate right high, left low, then left high, right low
2. Players dribble in and shoot jump shot 3. Players shoot any shot they want. |
1. Players decrease the speed of their shot. |
Attack the gap-pass or shoot
| Explanation of drill | Extension | Refinement |
| Similar to three on three but in boundaries. To begin pass the ball to your defender, run to receive a return pass, fake one direction and drive to the gap. For the purpose of the drill the defender should go with the fake and allow you into the gap. Now you must key on next defender. If the defender does not move continue to shoot, if he fills the gap, pass to teammate how attacks the now open gap and shoots. Alternate positions, switch offense and defense. | 1. Center back court player 100% defense. | 1. Put a defender in goal
2. Widen boundaries for offense, shorten for defense |
Switching drill
| Explanation of drill | Extension | Refinement |
| You and a teammate position yourself in the middle on defense at the 6 meter line. A group of attackers line up at each wing. One wing dribbles around the goal area while the other wing runs around the goal. The dribbler passes to the other wing as their passes approach each other in the middle of court. Take responsibilty of the attacker in your defensive space, and switch when necessary. Communicate to teammate when switching. | 1. Perform switch against pick and roll
2. Perform switch against back court crossing. |
1. Have the offensive players go slower. |
Basic Keep away
Arrange students in an equal number of teams of our or five player.
Assign each set of two teams to a designated playing area with one ball.
Team A remains stationary, trying to pass the ball, while the defender
team moves around trying to intercept it. Players must pass within
3 seconds or the ball goes the defense. Whenever a defender steals the
ball , the defending team becomes the offense. Use variety of passes.
Keep away
Same as above except take three steps before passing.
Scored keep away
Same as basic keep away except add three dribbles when running with
ball, and add a goal line. When ever a team reaches the other teams
goal and completes two passes in end zone they receive a point.
Ten Passes
Similar to keep away except the goal is ten consecutive passes.
Only when everyone has touched the ball once do they receive 3 points.
The defense can 2 score points by intercepting it.
End Line handball
Set up two teams of equal numbers. starting with a center throw-off
and again after each score, team members attempt to pass and move the ball
toward their own end line while the opponents try to prevent forward
progress of the ball. The object is too pass (throw or bounce) the
ball to your goalie who stands behind the end line. The goalie must
catch the ball either in the air or on the first bounce to score.
The defense abides by all rules, and the defense is not allowed to charge
into opponent. Change goalie often.
Pin Handball
Play two side by side games across the gym or one game using the whole
gym. Set up a target (cone or bowling pin) at each end line in the
goal area that players cant enter. Mark the court with a restricted
area. The object is to play with handball rules and score by hitting
the pin. The rules should be modified to the playing level of students.
Half court handball
Same as regular handball just use half the court and add a goal to
the other side. Modify rules to playing level of players.
Full Court game
Arrange players into 7 on 7 and use man to man defense. Require
passing to everyone on team before shooting if team play is not occurring.
Rotate player positions.
